The rundown on this epic samurai show

What Is Shogun About?

Adapted from James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name, Shogun takes place in Japan in the year 1600 – the starting point of a huge civil war. You can expect Game of Thrones-style power plays and epic fight scenes as nobles and samurai leaders battle for dominance.

The official synopsis reads: ‘Producer Hiroyuki Sanada stars as Lord Yoshii Toranaga, who is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him. When a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village, its English pilot, John Blackthorne, comes bearing secrets that could help Toranaga tip the scales of power and devastate the formidable influence of Blackthorne’s own enemies — the Jesuit priests and Portuguese merchants.

‘Toranaga’s and Blackthorne’s fates become inextricably tied to their translator, Toda Mariko, a mysterious Christian noblewoman and the last of a disgraced line. While serving her lord amidst this fraught political landscape, Mariko must reconcile her newfound companionship with Blackthorne, her commitment to the faith that saved her and her duty to her late father.’

Will There Be A Season 2?

Unfortunately, nothing has been confirmed just yet. There’s no sequel to the original Shogun novel, so the second season of the show would need an entirely new screenplay. However, it looks like its creators haven’t ruled it out – in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, writer Justin Marks stated: ‘I think if we had a story, if we could find a story, we would be open to it.’ We’ve got our fingers crossed.
