Keira Knightley's new thriller will launch in October

Beloved British star Keira Knightley has taken a bit of a step back from the limelight in recent years – but exploded back onto our screens last December with festive spy thriller Black Doves. That has been renewed for a second season, but before we see it, Knightley has another Netflix project in the works. Here’s everything we know so far about The Woman in Cabin 10, a rocky cruise thriller coming this autumn.

What Will Happen?

Helmed by Australian film and theatre director Simon Stone (who previously directed The Dig [2021] starring Carey Mulligan and Ralph Fiennes), The Woman in Cabin 10 sets the scene on a luxury superyacht, where travel journalist Lo (Knightley) is on assignment covering the vessel’s first voyage (and it seems there’s a charitable angle, too).

But late one night, Lo witnesses a passenger tossed overboard. Shaken, she reports the incident – only to be told she must have dreamt it. All passengers are accounted for, so who did Lo see? What began as a cushy assignment unravels into a twisty journey on the high seas – where, of course, many of the rules governing normal life are suspended.

‘I am not imagining this,’ Lo insists in the trailer. No one believes her: not the yacht’s owner Richard Bullmer (Guy Pearce), nor her fellow passengers, played by The Gentlemen‘s Daniel Ings and Kaya Scodelario, the latter’s character calling Lo’s insistence ‘a bit of a downer’ and ‘kind of toxic’.

Nevertheless Lo hunts for answers, ultimately putting herself in danger, too. Watch the tense trailer below for a taste of the action.

As writer-director Simon Stone points out, there’s something fishy going on. ‘You never question whether or not she saw what she saw,’ he tells Netflix. ‘You agree completely with her. It’s her struggle against the conspiracy.’

Based on British author Ruth Ware’s bestselling 2016 novel of the same name, The Woman in Cabin 10 still resonates a decade after publication because ‘the fear of not being believed is perennial, unfortunately,’ the author tells Netflix. ‘Cabin 10, at its heart, is about a woman who experiences something wrong, reports it truthfully, and isn’t taken seriously because of who she is. Too many people know what that feels like and I think we want vindication for ourselves as much as Lo.’

Ware described the process of adaptation ‘truly amazing’, especially ‘seeing so many people working so hard on something you created’. But it was ‘also a big leap of faith,’ she tells Netflix. ‘Like handing your baby over to strangers. But I feel Lo and company are in good hands.’

Earlier this month, Ware published a highly anticipated sequel to her cruise best-seller, this time titled The Woman in Suite 11. Here, we reunite Lo Blacklock, who is on her first assignment after leaving the industry 10 years ago: attending the opening of a luxury Swiss hotel owned by reclusive billionaire Marcus Leidmann. Three years since the birth of her youngest child, Lo is ready to reestablish her journalism career. But the landscape has changed since the pandemic. Hoping to snag an interview with Marcus, Lo soon realises he’s even trickier to pin down than the rumours had led her to believe. So when she receives a late night call inviting her to Marcus’ hotel room, she jumps at the chance. When the door opens, however, she’s greeted by a woman claiming to be the billionaire’s mistress – and she’s in a life or death situation.

Sounds tense, twisty and perfect visual thriller fodder; do we sniff a new film series on the horizon?
