A foodie's guide to the royally approved island

Perched on the west coast of Scotland, the Isle of Mull has long been famous for its picture-perfect scenery – as well as being the filming location for children’s TV favourite Balamory. But now the island is in the spotlight for another reason: Prince William and Kate Middleton celebrated their 14th wedding anniversary there, staying in a cottage. So where might the royal couple have dined during their trip? We highlight some of the best places to eat on the Isle of Mull.

Isle Of Mull: Best Restaurants & Cafes

The Isle of Mull is a haven for foodies, with numerous great restaurants, cafes and farm shops dotted around. Local produce is abundant, with plenty of fresh seafood from the vast waters surrounding the island, alongside high-quality meat and vegetables grown on the rolling hills inland.

Am Birlin

Undoubtedly one of the best places to dine on the Isle of Mul is Am Birlin, a restaurant housed in a wooden building, perched beside a stream and surrounded by trees. The menu is all about showcasing the island’s bountiful natural larder, with a focus on fish. Begin with the traditional starter of cullen skink or a plate of Tobermory smoked trout tartare ahead of mains like Atlantic haddock with fries, seafood stew with chorizo, or slow cooked pork belly with crispy potato terrine.

The Creel Seafood Bar

As soon as you get off the ferry – or as a parting gift on your way back – stop by The Creel, a seafood bar positioned right by the terminal in Fionnphort. Seafood doesn’t get much fresher than this: it’s all caught by either owner Andrew or brought in by local divers, with mussels, scallops and more available to enjoy while soaking up the sea views.

Isle of Mull Cheese

In the 1980s, the Reade family moved from Somerset to the Isle of Mull, buying some land and creating their own farm, Sgriob-ruadh. Ever since, they have been creating their own produce using 100 percent renewable energy, including the award-winning cheese they have become famous for. This week, the company took part in the Tobermory Producers Market, which was visited by Prince William and Princess Kate during their visit.

The Foodie Shack

For pizza on the Isle of Mull, head to The Foodie Shack, a moving trailer which stops in a different location each night. It serves an array of wood-fired pizzas, from a pepperoni and hot honey number to the Mull special, which is topped with Tobermory fish smoked salmon, chorizo and red onion.

Ninth Wave

Just reopened for the summer season is Ninth Wave, a destination restaurant set on the moors of Mull. Founded by husband-and-wife duo John and Carla Lamont, the menu pairs Asian and Pacific flavours with Scottish ingredients – many grown in the on-site kitchen garden. The restaurant offers four and five-course set menu lunches, with a focus on cured, smoked and brined meat and seafood, alongside foraged ingredients from sorrel to bog myrtle.

Cafe Fish Tobermory

Found on the upper floor of the Calmac Pier, this long-standing hotspot offers unparalleled views over Tobermory Bay and out to Calve Island. As the name suggests, it’s all about seafood: langoustines and lobster arrive daily from the restaurant’s own fishing boat, alongside oysters and crabs from down the road in Croig. The menu includes decadent shellfish platters, fish stew and fresh fillets of fish, which are simply seasoned and grilled with a side of your choice.
