Here's what you need to know

Announced last spring, the Harry Potter reboot will bring J. K. Rowling’s beloved wizard novels back to the screen – this time, the small screen. That’s right: it’s not a sequel nor a prequel, but reportedly a ‘faithful’ adaptation of Rowling’s original seven novels crafted by an all-star team at HBO. With a fresh faced trio of Harry, Ron and Hermione set to star and filming officially underway, here’s what you need to know.

Harry Potter TV Reboot: Cast, Release Date & More

Filming is officially underway on HBO’s Harry Potter reboot at the Warner Bros’ studio in Leavesden, just outside of London. Here, recent projects include Barbie (2023), Mickey 17 (2025), The Batman (2022) and Wicked (2024), as well as the original films back in the day.

Based on J.K. Rowling’s fantasy children’s novels centred on orphaned wizard Harry Potter and his time at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the original seven books spawned eight movies, with the grand finale – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – split into two.

It seems this TV reboot will similarly be at least seven seasons long, chronicling the action of each novel in each season – giving plenty more breathing room to the novels’ intricate details lamentably missing from the films; rumours suggest we’re looking at a 10-year journey from now to completion, a similar timeline to the films (which were released between 2001 and 2011).

Why Are They Making A Harry Potter Reboot?

The idea with a Harry Potter TV reboot has been toyed with since 2019, with various prequels and sequels for the small screen discussed – but eventually ditched. Flash forward to 2021, David Zaslav became the new CEO of Warner Bros and travelled to London to meet author J.K. Rowling to discuss possible TV shows in her universe. With the whopping success of the eight original films and the enduring appeal of the franchise proved by the popularity of the Hogwarts Legacy video game in 2023, it’s a no brainer: a TV series will generate more cash for Warner Bros and please old fans who perceive shortcomings in the original films, all while attracting a whole new generation of wizarding world fans.

A month after Hogwarts Legacy hit the shelves, things really started moving: Warner Bros closed a deal with Rowling for an adaptation, with the author playing a part in creative development. In April of the same year, the reboot idea was confirmed: the TV series won’t be anything new, but instead a faithful adaptation of Rowling’s original seven books, with seven 10-episode seasons beginning with the first in 2027. Full steam ahead!
