The pop superstar is teaming up with the world’s largest streaming platform

Rumour has it, Netflix has teamed up with Canadian producer Shawn Levy to work on a limited biographical series telling Madonna’s story – and the global pop sensation is on board. Here’s everything we know so far.

Netflix’s Madonna Series: Everything We Know So Far

Word of a Madonna biopic has been floating across tinsel town for a while now, but we’re told this Netflix venture has nothing to do with Universal’s previous punt at a Madonna feature film, which Emmy-winning star Julia Garner was pegged to star in.

The pop-star also had a hand in writing that feature film, which reportedly fell apart in January 2023. ‘I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer,’ the star said on the proposed film in 2020. ‘A human being, trying to make her way in this world.’

Despite the film being scrapped, the pop star has remained committed to making a film about her life – and having a hand in the writing of it. ‘There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell it than me,’ she continued. ‘It’s essential to share the rollercoaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.’

Madonna has been the subject of plenty of documentaries across her career – the most recent being Sky’s Becoming Madonna, released at the very end of 2024 – as well as concert films. However, this would be the star’s very first venture into a dramatisation of her life.

Here at Netflix, we’re starting from scratch – and it seems Deadline caught wind of this limited biographical series just as it was getting off the ground.

What Will Happen?

No news just yet on which period of Madonna’s decades-spanning career the biographical series will centre on, but we imagine we will start at the beginning: when a 20-year-old Michigan-born Madonna Louise Ciccone dropped out of college and hopped on a plane to New York City to pursue a career in music and dance. That was 1978, and just five years later, her eponymous debut album would catalyse her rise to stardom.

Over the decades, Madonna would become the best-selling female artist of all time, impacting society, pop-culture, sex politics and sexuality.

Who Will Star?

Julia Garner was attached to star in the Madonna film – and it seems she might move over to Netflix along with the idea. Having previously starred in (and bagged awards for) Ozark and Inventing Anna, and having just signed on for her third lead role at Netflix, there’s a natural synergy here – at least as far as business is concerned.

Other stars previously connected to the Madonna film include Florence Pugh, Alexa Demie, Odessa Young and Bebe Rexha, who all reportedly attended singing and dancing bootcamps in pursuit of the role.

Release Date

It’s very early days, so no news just yet on when we will get to see the Madonna biographical series. When it is finished, it will be released exclusively on Netflix.
