Alan Carr Is Auctioning Off His Castle Furniture

The comedian and DIY enthusiast is selling unwanted items from his newly bought castle to help raise funds for its renovation

It seems Alan Carr’s been busy. Our favourite Chatty-turned-Castle Man has spent the last few months in Scotland, working to transform the sprawling grounds and grand interiors of Ayton Castle into his forever home. (And, naturally, he’s bringing us along for the ride, with a Disney+ show in the works.) The latest news from Carr’s castle? The comedian is set to host an auction at his new residence this weekend (5 July 2026), where he’ll be selling off over 400 unwanted pieces from the estate.

Alan Carr’s Castle Auction: The Details

If you’ve ever attempted a home clear-out before a big move, you’ll know it’s a pretty mammoth job. But what about, instead of a house, you had to clear out a castle? That’s Alan Carr’s next job in his seemingly endless list of things to prepare before he moves into his Traitors-style Scottish castle.

Carr snapped up Ayton Castle in Berwickshire last year, following his Celebrity Traitors win and as part of a bigger move to change his life in the months leading up to his 50th birthday. ‘Some men when they have a midlife crisis buy a Lamborghini or grow a ponytail, but me – I want my very own castle,’ he said of the move. ‘Since I was a boy in Northampton, I’ve always dreamt big, and have always been enchanted with the history and romance of a stately home and as I turn 50, I feel it’s my time. All I want is a turret to call my own – get me over that drawbridge!’

And, in between redesigning his new space and continuing his TV work, he’s found the time to give Ayton Castle a massive clearout. Working with auction house Railtons, Carr will be selling more than 400 pieces of furniture, pictures, textiles, rugs, ceramics and more from his new home – with the proceeds presumably going towards the upkeep of his castle.

‘Basically it’s the residual contents of Ayton Castle,’ Jim Railton, a spokesperson for the auction house, told the BBC. ‘Alan Carr, as we know, has bought the castle and he’s bought a certain amount of the furnishings.

‘But the residual items that he doesn’t want – and that the last owners of the castle don’t want to take to their new house – we’re selling.’

Auction Highlights

Alan Carr’s Ayton Castle auction will contain a whopping 464 lots, which as we mentioned spans everything from furniture and home decorations.

Almost a quarter of the sale, however, will be made up of sculpted pieces from the Branxton Cement Menagerie. Consisting of over 90 lots, these folk art pieces were created by a retired joiner from Northumberland in the 1960s to entertain his disabled son – and when the collection grew to more than 200 items, it soon became a local visitor attraction. The collection was sold and relocated to Ayton Castle back in 2021.

‘It’s naive art,’ Railton explained. ‘It was created by a retired joiner for his disabled son and it was a well-known visitor attraction in Branxton. People came from far and wide to visit it in Branxton and the whole lot was bought by the previous owners of Ayton Castle.’

Beyond the cement menagerie, curious shoppers can also get their hands on Edwardian tea sets, Singer sewing machines, Victorian grandfather clocks, Regency-style tables and a small collection of artworks dating back a few hundred years. Most items in the auction are estimated at just a few hundred, bar one: a five-seater 2011 Bentley Mulsanne with just over 40,000 miles on the clock, which could sell for between £20,000 and £30,000. Imagine driving off with that bid…
