The Case For Black Walls

Now, we know what you’re thinking: ‘Black? On the walls?’ But trust us, you won’t find a chicer choice when it comes to wallpaper. ‘Black wallpapers add drama and sophistication to a scheme,’ agrees Chloe Vince, senior decorating consultant at House of Hackney. ‘They’re made for creating intimate spaces, since black absorbs light rather than reflects it. Think of it as a cocooned space, with pretty patterns and textures.’

Although, she adds, there is still quite a bit of hesitancy when it comes to using black wallpaper. ‘I think there is often a misconception that they are quite dominant and can feel overpowering for a scheme,’ says Chloe. ‘But when done right, you can create a well-balanced statement.’

For those who still struggle with the idea of all-black room, fear not – the best way to ease into this palette is by combining it with a nature-inspired print. ‘For a twist on a classic, opt for florals painted against a backdrop of soft black accented with rich tones of mocha, chocolate and pinky browns,’ recommends Chloe. ‘It’s a great choice for those wanting to achieve a timeless scheme.’

And if you want to brighten the space further, the interiors expert suggests ‘picking out the lighter tones within the wallpaper for furnishings and accessories’. Think headboards, cushions, bedding and towels. ‘Using a nature-inspired colour palette is a great place to start when trying to create a cohesive scheme,’ she adds.

Where To Lay Your Black Wallpaper

Start off small, suggests Chloe. If you want to get a feel for working with darker wallpapers, she recommends beginning with rooms like the bathroom or downstairs loo. ‘Black wallpapers are great for most spaces, but I particularly love them for a bathroom,’ she highlights. ‘Bathrooms are the perfect space to be more daring with your interiors and opt for more whimsical choices.’

From there, you can quite quickly branch out. A black kitchen, underscored by matching monochrome check tiles? A moody bedroom decorated with whimsical florals and vines? Or maybe the hallway, dressed in twirling black patterns and sporadic pops of colour? Sounds lush to us.
