Winter warmers don’t stop at the bar

The days are shorter and the nights are creeping in – you guessed it, winter is here. Now’s the time to give your space the update it needs so that you can squirrel yourself away from frosty evenings in calm cosiness (preferably under a mountain of blankets). But before you start eyeing up the rug and the couch cushions, look up – to the walls, that is. A winter wallpaper refresh could be just what the (design) doctor ordered.

Why Winter Is The Perfect Time To Refresh Your Wallpaper

The change in season is often ripe for trying something new – even when it’s too cold to actually set foot outside. This naturally makes winter an opportune time to look inward, more specifically at the design and feel of our homes. ‘Winter is the perfect season to refresh your interiors,’ agrees Victoria Yardley, founder of family-run paint and wallpaper brand Victory Colours. ‘As the days shorten and the weather turns moody, our homes become our sanctuaries – and what better time to cocoon yourself in comfort?’

It can feel a little daunting to pick up the paste and paper in the middle of winter – most of us are more familiar with a good spring clean – but considering this is the month we spend most of our time indoors, it can’t hurt to kick off the home transformation a little early. ‘In short, don’t wait for spring – now is exactly the right time to make your home sing again,’ says Victoria. ‘Winter decorating isn’t about hibernation; it’s about reinvigoration.’

So, where to start? Wallpaper, of course. ‘The light changes, the pace slows, and we naturally crave warmth, texture and depth – all of which a wallpaper can deliver beautifully,’ highlights Victoria. ‘A new wallpaper can completely transform a space, and when paired with rich paint shades, the result feels both timeless and intentional.’

There isn’t one correct route to take when it comes to picking out a winter wallpaper. Colour palettes can range from crisp neutrals to rich burgundies and pines, while prints can pick up on seasonal flora (holly, roses, poinsettia, fir and snow drops), heritage prints (countryside tartan is our top pick) and even a touch of après ski.

The trick to nailing your wall composition, according to Victoria, is to ‘think about layering textures – velvet cushions, wool throws, brass accents – and balancing light with warm-toned bulbs to keep everything glowing. The key is to create rooms that embrace the season rather than resist it.’

You can also revert to specific themes to help centre the aesthetic of the room. For something bold and rich in tone, Victoria suggests ‘charming, heritage-inspired prints’ set in a colour palette of wine, aubergine and inky blue. ‘The contrast creates a cocooning, dramatic feel – perfect for dining rooms, snug lounges, or reading corners.’

For a calmer setting, however, think lighter tones, dainty illustrations and natural scenes. ‘These keep things fresh and modern,’ says Victoria. ‘Ideal for bedrooms, garden rooms or hallways that deserve a touch of grace.’

Have a feature wall to plan? Be prepared to go all out. Whether it’s in the hallway, your living room or a bedroom snug, this will be the spotlight of the room – which means you have free reign to delve straight into a maximalist print. (Vintage skiers trailing down the Alps? Yes, please.)
