Opera season is in full swing

Have you booked your tickets for Glyndebourne Festival this year? The annual opera festival returns to the eponymous English country house in East Sussex this May, for a long summer season of performances. It’s not one to be missed; not just for the shows, but the fashion too. And for those wondering not to wear, fear not – here we ask a top stylist to lay out what to wear to Glyndebourne, from dress codes to style inspiration.

Glyndebourne: A Style Guide

There isn’t an event in the calendar quite like Glyndebourne. The Sussex estate has been hosting its annual opera festival since 1934 – and has remained a fixed highlight of the summer social season ever since.

But beyond the performances and beautiful backdrop, it’s the fashion that never fails to impress us year after year. ‘I love Glyndebourne’s unique blend of relaxed glamour, brought about by the serene outdoor setting and formal black tie dressing,’ says Nicole Smallwood, stylist and fashion director at Country & Town House. ‘I picture evening gowns and tuxedos worn on lawns with picnic hampers – there’s a sense of occasion that feels both elevated and charmingly British.

‘Glyndebourne is as much about the social experience as the opera itself, particularly the long picnic interval,’ she adds. With this in mind, the fashion is often catered to multiple settings and activities. ‘Your outfit should work across different moments – daytime, evening and outdoor dining. It’s an event where making an effort is part of the tradition, so it’s worth leaning into the sense of occasion while keeping things comfortable and unique.’

Is There A Dress Code?

Yes, there are multiple dress codes for Glyndebourne: evening performances typically acquire more formal attire, while daytime events such as rehearsals, open days and picnics ask for semi-formal dress. In the case of the opera, it’s expected that guests will attend in black tie attire.

‘Traditionally, Glyndebourne follows a black-tie dress code: tuxedos or dinner jackets for men, and evening gowns or elegant dresses for women,’ confirms Nicole. The stylist, however, has noticed a slight shift in the fashions over the years – with more people interpreting black tie in a more playful way. ‘Guests these days prefer a more relaxed and personal interpretation of black tie –  incorporating more colour, prints, and modern silhouettes – and there’s less emphasis on rigid rules.’

And there’s also the environment to contend with; with much of the Glyndebourne programme hosted in the gardens, guests need to make sure they’re prepared for all terrains and elements. ‘Comfort has also become more important, with practical choices like flats or block heels gaining popularity,’ notes Nicole. ‘Overall, the attitude has moved toward effortless elegance rather than strict formality.’

A Stylist’s Top Tips: What To Wear To Glyndebourne

Dress For Indoors & Outdoors

Since you’ll be drifting between indoor venues and the sprawling gardens of the estate, you’ll want an outfit that will work comfortably in both environments. ‘Choose pieces that feel appropriate for black tie but still work in a garden environment – lighter fabrics and softer tailoring are ideal,’ emphasises Nicole. ‘Overly heavy or restrictive outfits can feel uncomfortable across a long outdoor evening; you’ll be sitting and moving around outdoors, so stay chic and comfortable.’

Invest In Practical Footwear

‘Very high stilettos won’t get you very far on grass,’ says Nicole. Instead, you’ll want either a lower or broader heel – or no heel at all. ‘Grass-friendly options like block heels, wedges, or smart flats are a much better option.’

Bring Light Layers

Evenings quickly get chilly at Glyndebourne, so make sure you’re prepared with layers that can easily be pulled on later in the day. ‘Bring a wrap, shawl or light jacket that complements your outfit,’ says Nicole. ‘My motto is ignore the weather reports and dress for all seasons – we know how quickly British weather can change.’

Add Some Personality

While a sweeping black gown is a classic, it’s not a uniform. Glyndebourne has become the perfect location for people to push the boundaries of formal attire, creating an ideal canvas for exhibiting personal style. ‘Don’t be afraid to experiment with colour and texture,’ emphasises Nicole. ‘This is a great opportunity to move beyond the traditional all-black outfit and embrace something more unique.’

Avoid Casual Attire

Remember the dress code; you won’t be let in if you don’t follow it properly. ‘Avoid anything overly casual, like jeans, denim or trainers,’ echoes Nicole. ‘The event still leans into a more formal dress code, which guests are required to follow.’
