As the third Sunday of the month, 15 June draws nigh — heed this date if you’re reading this in the UK, US, Europe or Canada— it’s time to think about Father’s Day presents. In the US, Father’s Day has been celebrated since 1910, so they’re used to it. Father’s Day in the United Kingdom and other countries was inspired by the American custom, so we’re not quite so good at it yet. While dad may be notoriously difficult to buy for, there are some all-rounder winners that will surely bring a smile to his face. When Is Father’s Day?
Father’s Day always falls annually on the third Sunday of June – and in 2025, it’s on Sunday 15 June.
As we mentioned above, the first Father’s Day actually kicked off first in the US over 100 years ago, and it was apparently inspired by the (older) tradition of Mother’s Day. It took place on 19 June 1910, and was organised by American artist and poet Sonora Smart Dodd at a YMCA in Spokane, Washington. The popularity of the event over the following years meant that it was officially formalised as a nationwide observation by US President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1966.
It took a little longer for recognition to roll into the UK (fashionably late, as ever), but in 1972 Father’s Day was officially recognised in the UK.
