Packed with skin-quenching ingredients, these face mists are perfect for a hydration boost
Whether you’ve seen them littered across your TikTok feed, in a friend’s handbag or on the shop shelves, face mists are having a moment in the skincare space. We tap the experts to find out just what they do for our skin, and which ones are worth the investment.
What Is A Face Mist?
‘A face mist is a lightweight skincare product designed to hydrate, refresh or soothe the skin,’ explains Dr. Anna Andrienko, a board
‘It works by instantly calming and hydrating the skin while creating a protective barrier against environmental stressors,’ adds David Connor, a skincare expert and co-founder of Kanzen Skincare. ‘It’s particularly effective for reducing redness, irritation and breakouts due to its antimicrobial action.
‘One of the most advanced types of face mists available today is a hypochlorous acid (HOCl) spritz, which utilises hypochlorous acid – a naturally occurring compound in the body known for its calming, antimicrobial and healing properties.’
What Are The Benefits?
Our experts highlight that hydration is the core benefit of using a face mist. ‘A good face mist delivers hydration, helps support the skin barrier and can improve the absorption of other skincare products,’ says Dr. Andrienko. ‘Some formulas also contain antioxidants or soothing agents like chamomile, making them useful for calming inflammation or post-exercise redness. They’re also brilliant for travel or long-haul flights when skin tends to get dehydrated.’
As David summarises:
- Hydration Boost: Restores moisture levels without clogging pores.
- Soothing & Calming: Reduces redness, inflammation, and irritation effectively.
- Skin Barrier Support: Helps maintain a healthy skin barrier, preventing moisture loss.
- Antimicrobial Protection (HOCl): HOCl is renowned for its ability to eliminate harmful bacteria, making it ideal for acne-prone or sensitive skin.
How To Use It
‘Hold the bottle a few inches away from your face and spritz a few times evenly, keeping your eyes closed,’ instructs Dr. Andrienko. ‘Let it settle for a few seconds before patting in gently, if needed.’
And where does it fit into our skincare routine? ‘You can use a face mist after cleansing and before serums or moisturiser,’ says Dr. Andrienko. ‘It helps slightly dampen the skin, which can make active ingredients absorb better. Some people also like to use it after applying makeup or as a refresher throughout the day.’
How Often Should You Use Face Mist?
While it largely depends on your skin’s needs, both experts say that face mists can be applied multiple times throughout the day. ‘Morning, afternoon and evening – particularly after exposure to pollutants, post-gym workout, or whenever your skin feels irritated or tight,’ recommends David.
‘Around one to three times a day is typical,’ adds Dr. Andrienko. ‘More often in hot weather or when travelling is perfectly fine, as long as the formula is well balanced. There’s no strict rule when it comes to timing, but it’s especially helpful first thing in the morning or mid-afternoon when skin starts to feel dry or tight.’
Dr. Andrienko also recommends carrying face mist with you in your handbag – ‘especially in cities or dry climates’ — if you plan to be out and about most of the day. ‘And if you’re using a mist with active ingredients, don’t forget SPF. Some ingredients, like vitamin C, need to be protected to stay effective.’
Can You Use It Over Makeup?
It’s good news: ‘Yes, many mists are formulated to be used over makeup,’ confirms Dr. Andrienko. ‘They can help set the look, reduce any cakiness and give a more natural, dewy finish.’
‘The fine mist ensures even distribution, locking in moisture and delivering antimicrobial protection without affecting your makeup look,’ adds David.
But don’t be heavy handed with misting over makeup, notes Dr. Andrienko. ‘Just don’t oversaturate, a light mist is enough.’
Does It Work For All Skin Types?
‘Most skin types can benefit, but it’s important to choose the right formula,’ explains Dr. Andrienko. ‘Sensitive or reactive skin should avoid artificial fragrance and alcohol. Look for calming ingredients like aloe vera, rose water or niacinamide.’
Who Should Avoid Using Face Mist?
‘If you have extremely reactive skin or certain dermatological conditions like rosacea, it’s best to check the ingredient list carefully or speak to a professional,’ recommends Dr. Andrienko. ‘Some mists with strong actives or essential oils may not be suitable.’
‘People with severe skin conditions or open wounds should consult a dermatologist before using a face mist,’ adds David.
What To Look Out For
Shopping for a face mist? Here’s what to keep in mind, says Dr. Andrienko: ‘Check the ingredients, avoid heavily fragranced or alcohol-laden mists if you have dry or sensitive skin. Look for humectants like glycerin or hyaluronic acid for hydration, and antioxidants like vitamin C or green tea extract if you want added protection.’
