We explore the great outdoors in a wild off-roader
Motoring editor Jeremy Taylor and Jessica Talbot-Ponsonby test the ideal camper for those who want to escape to nature: Wild Camper Trucks.
Review: Wild Camper Trucks
J-TP – Aren’t camper vans generally as aesthetically pleasing as a fridge on wheels?
JT – Normally, I’d have to agree, but renting a Wild Camper Trucks vehicle is slightly different – and it boasts a unique selling point.
The one we tested wasn’t exactly svelte but true, it does reach the places more traditional camper vans fear to go.
That’s because this vehicle is based on a rugged, go-anywhere Ford Ranger pick-up, with all-wheel drive and enough ground clearance to scramble up a mountain track.
So, instead of being restricted to a campsite with dozens of other campers, the Wild truck will happily go above and beyond. With the landowner’s permission, you’re guaranteed a pitch all to yourself – and no noisy neighbours, apart from wandering sheep.
It’s still nowhere near as cool as your old VW camper van, but I can see the appeal. The accommodation box sits on top of the flatbed load area and is perfect for two adults, while a roofbox tent above adds extra sleeping space via a hatch in the roof.
I think it’s best described as ‘cosy’ inside, with a tiny kitchenette – gas stove and sink – plus a fridge underneath the tiny table. Add a shower and camping toilet, and every square inch of space is spoken for.
Still, better than battling with a tent in a howling gale. The pick-up truck itself has a back seat, perfect for keeping clothes and other camping paraphernalia out of the living space.
This truck is dog-friendly too, which is good because it’s an ideal camper for those who want to get away from it all and appreciate the great outdoors – however muddy.
And there’s that one extra feature that gives the Wild camper extra appeal.
That’s right – the outdoor cinema! An awning rolls down one side of the van, allowing the portable projector to flash up a film of your choice. Super simple to use and the ultimate drive-in movie.
The team at Wild can advise you on the best places to camp off-grid, while the company plants 25 trees to off-set the truck’s fuel emissions.
Perfect. Time for a wild ride.
