Meet the springtime vest poised for 2025 domination

Has spring finally sprung in the UK? Whatever the verdict, you’ll likely be after some transitional staples for your wardrobe. Sit amongst the fashion pack with a lovely tie front gilet, which we promise will see you through the season (and beyond).

Tie Front Gilets Are Fast Becoming A Wardrobe Staple

ICYMI: spring is here. While the promise of warmer weather is encouraging many of us to shed our big, bulky coats, we’re not quite ready to drop all of our layers so soon. But how to make these layers pop? Cue the style set’s latest obsession, the tie front gilet.

The lightweight bit of outerwear, described as a sleeveless jacket or vest with a front closure that is tied together (no zips or buttons here, thank you), has quietly been picking up speed amongst fashion‘s chill-inclined for inciting the perfect balance of hot and cold – without falling into the trappings of excessively layered jumpers, jackets and scarves that ultimately get pulled off by midday come spring.

The trend is not an old one, but rather an evolution of last summer’s fixation on thin tie-front vests and shirts – which in turn was a revamp of similar early 2000s attire – although, where last summer’s iteration emphasised light, partywear pieces, this season’s rendition is all about transitional utility; think quilted materials, reversible designs and oversized frames perfect for light layering. And as for the design and how it’s styled, we’ve noticed that spring’s tie front gilet places a lot more emphasis on softer aesthetics, likely aided by coquette bows and cottagecore frills and prints.

So, now you know about spring’s next big outerwear trend – fancy giving it a go? We’ve outlined some of our favourite styling inspiration below to get you started.

How To Style A Tie Front Gilet

Cottagecore Layers

As we mentioned, this style of gilet goes hand-in-hand with the ever-popular cottagecore trend – meaning it works especially well with shirts, linens (ideal for those one-off warmer days) and frilly detailing. It’s also a lovely way to add a pop of colour to an otherwise neutral palette; we especially love this combo of candy pink stripes on a white background. It’s giving grandmacore, specifically of the chic, whimsical, lives-in-the-middle-of-the-woods variety.

Colour Pop

You can, however, take the trend from countryside to city with the help of a little (read: a lot) extra colour. The combination of bold, block colours – we like the idea of blending a few, particularly opposite and adjacent shades on the colour wheel – will quite easily elevate your fit beyond its cottage-y origins and give more of a maximalist Scandi vibe.

Mixed Neutrals

But if colour is not something you take lightly, you can still fall back on neutrals to bring this trend to life. Simply take you tie front gilet of choice and match it with a calmer base colour for the layers you plan to wear underneath. To avoid your outfit looking flat, you can use patterns and textures (both with your gilet or underlayers) to give a little more depth.
