Cheer in style at these riverside hotspots

Whether you’re a rowing pro or are just there for the drinks, the Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race is always a fun day out – particularly if the sun is shining. The capital’s riverside comes alive as people gather in gardens, pubs and restaurants to watch the rowers battle it out for victory. So where can you get the best view (and vibes)? Here’s where to watch the Boat Race on 4 April 2026, from historic pubs to seafood restaurants.

Where To Watch The Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race 2026

The Duke’s Head, Putney

If you want to catch the start of the race, head to The Duke’s Head in Putney. With its large terrace set on the riverbank, this pub is a great place to watch – complete with live music, street food and drinks from The Jubel Land Rover pop-up bar.

The Crabtree, Hammersmith

This giant, flower-bedecked beer garden is one of London’s most beloved, and always has a lively atmosphere on Boat Race day. Get stuck into some Pimm’s and craft beers before strolling down to the riverside to catch the race (or stay put and watch it on one of the big screens). There will be pop-ups serving burgers, paella and more, plus live bands throughout the day.

Rick Stein Barnes

If you’re after a proper meal while you watch, head to Rick Stein’s Barnes outpost to tuck into a lavish seafood feast. The celebrations begin with oysters and champagne ahead of a three-course lunch featuring dishes like marinated tuna with passion fruit and lime, roasted monkfish with serrano ham, Indonesian seafood curry and ballotine of Cornish cod, followed by caramelised white chocolate tart for pudding. If you’re a group of four or more, be sure to request a window seat for the best view in the house.

Exterior of The Old Ship pub in Hammersmith

Old Ship, Hammersmith

This long-standing riverside pub has been a popular spot for boat race spectators ever since the historic event began in 1845. Its terrace offers one of the best Boat Race views in London – but you’ll have to get there early to nab a table. Enjoy live music and lunch from the seafood shack, and stay for the afterparty.

The Rutland Arms, Hammersmith

Although roomier than its tiny neighbour Blue Anchor, you can guarantee The Rutland Arms will be jam-packed come race day. But those lucky enough to secure a table will be rewarded with great views, alongside classic pub food, ales and wines.

The White Hart Barnes

The White Hart, Barnes

Another Boat Race hotspot, The White Hart is a charming pub perched on the banks of the river, near the finish line. Cheer on the teams before tucking into drinks from the outdoor bar – or upgrade to a luxurious four-course gala lunch. Downstairs is walk-in only, so get there early to grab a spot.

The Boathouse, Putney

This Putney favourite is located just beside the finish line, with a rooftop terrace that was made for sunny Saturday afternoons. On 4 April, the venue is being given a carnival-style makeover featuring live entertainment, food and drink stalls and big screens.
