What Is It About?
The Narrow Road to the Deep North may only be five episodes long, but it packs a lot into each 40-minute journey, charting most of the life of Dorrigo Evans. We meet him as a young man (played by Jacob Elordi), and the saga traces his passionate love affair with Amy Mulvaney (Odessa Young), his time held captive in a WWII prisoner of war camp in occupied Burma and his later years as a revered surgeon and a reluctant hero (played by Irish star Ciarán Hinds).

It’s part bildungsroman, part love story – part war drama and part deep-dive into the psyche of a complex man. It’s based on Richard Flanigan’s novel of the same name, which bagged the prestigious Booker Prize in 2014.
The BBC’s head of programme acquisition Sue Deeks describes The Narrow Road to the Deep North as ‘complex, beautiful, and heart-wrenching’, having acquired it from producers Curio Pictures and distributors Sony Pictures Television to show to British audiences; elsewhere, the series has been available to stream on Prime Video since April. ‘We are so very pleased to bring this truly exceptional adaptation to BBC viewers,’ Sue says.
Adapted by Shaun Grant and directed by Justin Kurzel, The Narrow Road to the Deep North boasts a star-studded cast to boot. Take a look below.
