Review: Chalet V, La Tzoumaz – Verbier, Switzerland

Those in the know love La Tzoumaz for its laid-back family feel and back-door access to Verbier; Chalet V is the perfect base here for design-conscious skiers who want a bit more bang for their chalet buck. Owned and run by husband-and-wife team Zoe and Patrick, the property opened in 2019 and has quickly gained a reputation as one of the region’s most stylish stays. Every detail reflects the couple’s careful vision: elegant, thoughtful and full of character.

Arrival sets the tone. After a seamless transfer arranged by The Chalet Edit – all smiles, spotless interiors and a smooth ride from Geneva – we pulled up on the Plateau de Villy, where the solid oak door swung open and we were greeted like old friends. Within minutes, our luggage had been spirited away and we were sipping chilled champagne on the sunlit terrace, Nico (the in-house chef)’s canapĂ©s in hand, framed by sweeping views of the RhĂ´ne Valley. Beneath the decking, Patrick revealed a clever surprise: a heated outdoor pool ingeniously designed to withstand six tonnes of snow.

A kitchen in a chalet with many dangling globe lights and a metal oven-stove unit

Inside, the chalet feels both contemporary and cocooning, with south-facing sunshine flooding through the double-height living space and a wraparound balcony. There’s a lift, but it’s worth taking the stairs just to spot the details: vintage skis, bespoke iron handrails, playful art. The interiors are true mountain chic – rustic aged timbers offset by clean-lined modernity, Bocci rain-droplet pendants glinting above an oversized dining table. In the open-plan kitchen, Nico serves up gourmet fare from a Lacanche range, using a different dinner set each evening – celebrating both food and design sur la table. Even the glassware feels considered, with water carafes from Alpinte featuring tiny sculpted mountains at their base.

Two sets of bunk beds arranged either side of a window looking out to a snowy landscape

The four bedrooms on the first floor balance warmth and whimsy – from the family-friendly bunk room to a twin that doubles as a massage space. Each is individually styled, with V-shaped wardrobe handles, bold slipper collections and deep, soft linens. The top-floor master suite, meanwhile, is a true Alpine retreat: exposed beams, a freestanding bath, walk-in shower and private balcony for that first coffee above the clouds. Bathrooms are individually designed, with underfloor heating and an enviable selection of amenities from Hermès, Tiffany & Co. and Isle of Arran.

Sun-loungers on decking in front of mountains

Beyond the bedrooms, Chalet V delivers every imaginable indulgence. There’s a sauna, Jacuzzi and infinity pool, as well as a cinema room, retro pinball and table tennis for post-ski play. A restored vintage cable car with Chanel-inspired detailing adds a dash of whimsy, while the cellar hosts private tastings with local winemaker Thierry Constantin – a highlight of our stay, as we sampled his 2016 vintage over stories of mountain life. The service throughout is flawless: personal, warm and intuitive, from welcome chocolates and curated playlists to candlelit dinners crafted with care by Zoe and Nico.

La Tzoumaz itself offers a quiet charm. The chalet is just three minutes from the main gondola, with an optional 24/7 van service and a boot room conveniently located at the lift base. The vast Four Valleys are on your doorstep, with Verbier only 15 minutes away – easily reached via the scenic up-and-over bubble lift that drops non-skiers right in town for shopping and an aperitif. Don’t miss the impossibly glamorous terrace at Chalet d’Adrien opposite the Savoleyres lift – all fur hats, cigars and fine whisky in the winter sun. Families will love the nursery slope at the foot of the village, while the tree-lined runs of La Tzoumaz lead effortlessly into Verbier’s steeper terrain.

Whether you visit in snow-dusted winter or wildflower summer, Chalet V is a rare find: luxurious yet personal, playful yet refined. From the first glass of champagne on the terrace to the last sip of Thierry’s wine by the fire, every detail feels deliberate, distinctive and quietly dazzling. A masterclass in mountain living.
