The Olympic diver swaps speedos for knitting needles in this quirky crafting tournament
Left with a Bake Off shaped hole in your heart? Not for long. Channel 4’s latest cosy competition veers away from sausage rolls and treacle tarts into the world of wool, yarn and knitting needles. Headed up by the nation’s favourite poolside knitter, Tom Daley, Game Of Wool: Britain’s Best Knitter is just what we need to get us through a dreary winter. But what can we expect? Here’s the lowdown.
Game Of Wool: Everything You Need To Know About Tom Daley’s New Knitting Show
Tom Daley trades pool for wool in Channel 4’s buzzy new knitting competition which sees 10 amateur crafters battle it out in a bid to be crowned Britain’s best knitter. Set against the sprawling hills and meadows of the Scottish Highlands, Game Of Wool follows the tried-and-tested TV show formula: each week, the contestants will face a set of challenges (including an individual ‘Quick Knit’ and a large-scale team project) which will help the judges whittle down the competition until one knitter comes out on top.

Who Is The Host?
Our host needs little introduction. Tom Daley swam into the nation’s heart all the way back in 2008, when, at just 14, he became the youngest person to compete at the Beijing Olympics. Almost two decades – and five medals – later, and Daley is one of the UK’s most renowned athletes.
But the professional diver has been busy cultivating another passion outside of the pool: knitting. The public first caught a glimpse of Daley getting his knit on at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, when he went to support his fellow Team GB athletes poolside. Between spates of cheering, the diver worked on a cardigan with the words ‘GBR’ and ‘Tokyo’ (the latter written in Japanese) on the right shoulder, and a Union Jack on the left. (He also later knitted a little pouch for his gold medal.)
He’s since nurtured a public love for knitting – writing multiple books on the topic and launching his own brand, Made With Love By Tom Daley (from which you can get your own knit kit). And now, hot off his stint on The Celebrity Traitors, the Olympic champion is poised to dive back into the world of knitting as Game Of Wool’s host.

Who Are The Judges?
Daley will be joined in the knitting room by designers and textile experts Di Gilpin and Sheila Greenwell, who between them have an impressive roster of luxury clients – including Chanel, Vivienne Westwood and Paul Smith. Alongside a celebrity guest judge, they will be reviewing all of the contestants’ work after each challenge. And at the end of each week, they will crown the group’s ‘Best Knit’ and decide who will be ‘cast off’.
