When To Get Your Nails Done

An age-old dilemma. With events stacked throughout December – culminating in a mega NYE bash at the end of the month – it’s important to nail the timing of your manicure. ‘Preparation is key,’ says Leighton Denny MBE, nail expert and founder of Leighton Denny Nails. ‘Well-prepped nails and a quality base or top coat make all the difference.’ He adds that, if it’s just Christmas and New Year’s Eve you’re trying to lock down, then there are some key dates to consider for your mani appointment.

‘The secret to having your nails look flawless is all in the timing,’ he says. ‘Different polishes are made with different wear in mind: gel polishes are designed to last longer, while natural nail polishes are kind to nails, highly pigmented, and can last up to seven days with proper care.

‘If you’re using a product made for longer wear like gel, aim for an application between the 20 and 22 December to keep your manicure looking perfect until the New Year’s Eve celebration,’ Leighton continues. ‘For classic polish, meanwhile, two applications work best: one around 23 December for Christmas, and a refresh around 30 December to ensure your nails stay fresh for NYE.’

Party Season 2025: Nails Inspiration

Cat Eye

For a statement, opt for a new age classic: cat eye nails. ‘Party season calls for drama, and cat eye nails offer one of the most luminous, captivating looks right now,’ confirms Leighton. ‘Using magnetic pigment in the polish, it creates a ribbon of light that dances across the nail. This luminous look works best with a refined shape; swap a square-oval nail for a rounded almond style, as it visually lengthens the fingers and amplifies the feline effect.’

Jewel Tones

And when it comes to colour: ‘A rich, velvety jewel tone is a seasonal non-negotiable, and this year it’s all about green reimagined as a warm metallic,’ says Leighton. ‘Emerald nods to the festive season with a luminous, spellbinding finish. A metallic green is a shortcut to cosy glamour, providing instant festive impact thanks to its subtle shimmer and reflective glow – perfect for adding a touch of celebration without being over the top.

‘For a metallic finish to truly shine and last longer, keep cuticles neat and well-groomed – this helps your manicure endure daily wear while keeping hands looking younger and cared-for,’ he adds. ‘Finish with a high-shine top coat to reflect maximum light and boost longevity.’

Metallic Finish

When it comes to party season, metallics are inescapable. ‘Metallic textures are a festive staple and always make a comeback. They can range from full chrome one year to a magnetic, multidimensional finish the next, or even a burnished copper look,’ confirms Leighton. ‘The key is that they catch the festive light and instantly elevate your manicure, adding a sophisticated, party-ready finish. Metallics can also be layered over sheer shades for a subtle yet glamorous effect.’

Ombré Glitter

The other way to take on metallics? Glitter. ‘The “clean girl mani” has dominated trends for a while, but for Christmas, we want to dial up the glamour without losing sophistication,’ says Leighton. ‘Ombré glitter is the perfect solution. Dust fine silver or shimmering brown glitter from the tip and fade it subtly toward the nail bed for a tinsel-inspired sparkle that still feels chic. It’s a subtle shimmer that’s easily personalised. And if full ombré glitter feels too bold, try a playful glitter French tip. It captures the wintry sparkle while keeping the manicure light and wearable – perfect for those who love natural styles but want a festive twist.’

Rich Red

There’s also the season’s favourite colour to consider. ‘Dark, moody shades – ranging from your classic reds and chocolate browns to deeper, almost-black tones – always make a comeback during the festive season,’ notes Leighton. ‘These cooler-weather hues are chic and sophisticated without ever feeling over-the-top, complementing the season while flattering everyone.’

Gold Ombré

There are multiple ways to do metallics for party season – but a sophisticated ombré nail is one of our favourites. ‘Stunning gradients of metallic shades like gold, silver and rose gold will be everywhere for party season,’ confirms manicurist and Mylee Senior Ambassador, Tinu Bello. ‘Think smooth colour transitions from a deep base shade, to a shimmering shine at the tips.’

Snowy Silver White

Whether or not you’re forecasted a white Christmas this year, you can still frost your party look with an ice-cold mani. ‘Snow-white nails with silver foil or chrome accents are popping off for Christmas,’ notes Tinu. ‘This style resembles sparkling snowflakes on frosty winter landscape – winter perfection. You can then add delicate snowflake designs or keep it minimal with scattered silver dots or lines, for a bespoke finish.’

Tinsel Stripes

Taking inspiration from the tree this year? You’re not the only one. ‘For a look that screams “festive season” I recommend a fun take on tinsel nails,’ says Tinu. ‘Use a deep, dark base like midnight blue, plum or black, with tinsel-like metallic stripes running diagonally or vertically across each nail to replicate the dazzle of your tree.’

Pearl Nails

As far as we’re concerned, pearlcore is still alive and well – especially when it comes to the beauty scene. For this manicure, Tinu recommends ‘a soft pastel or nude base, with small pearl accents to get a subtle and elegant take on party nails. I love pearl adornments along the tips or on one or two accent nails, or a pearl effect with raised pearl-like embellishments for a 3D finish on all fingers.’

Champagne Gold

A mani worth toasting to? Following in the footsteps of the Moscow mule nails, Tinu predicts that we’ll find inspiration at the bar this season. And, looking ahead to New Year’s Eve, the prime tipple is none other than champagne. ‘A soft nude or champagne base creates a luxurious liquid gold effect, like drinking from a glass of champagne,’ she tells us. ‘Rich and bubbly; simple but effective.’
