Make haste! Part one is almost here

After an almost two-year wait, the social calendar is finally being unfurled once more. The countdown to Bridgerton season 4 is well and truly on, with Part 1 set to premiere on 29 January, featuring four episodes of fresh intrigue, new faces and delicately tended drama as another season of courting blooms. Chief among the newcomers is this season’s romantic heroine, Sophie (Yerin Ha), the enigmatic Lady in Silver who first catches Benedict Bridgerton’s (Luke Thompson) eye – and, in due course, his heart – at his mother’s masquerade ball.

But she isn’t the only new face in the Ton, and indeed Sophie will steal some of the spotlight from noble ladies debuting this season, including Rosamund Li (Michelle Mao) and Posy Li (Isabella Wei), coached by their determined mother Araminta Gun (Katie Leung).

For devotees of Julia Quinn’s novels, on which Netflix’s juggernaut is based, there’s another tidbit of newness to get excited about. As we grow better acquainted with the second-eldest Bridgerton son, viewers will be introduced to his own estate hidden in the countryside – unseen until now. Known as ‘My Cottage’, it plays a particularly memorable role in An Offer from a Gentleman (book three).

So is Benedict’s cottage real? And which British estate was selected to host this budding love story? Here’s what you need to know.

Bridgerton Season 4: Is Benedict’s Cottage Real?

When Benedict and Sophie swap the Ton for the country in Bridgerton season 4, the foundations for their love story are laid. But don’t get too excited: this retreat actually happens very early in their story – before Benedict knows the true identity of the Lady in Silver.

But we’re not here to spoil the story. So where is My Cottage? Actors Luke Thompson and Yerin Ha spent two weeks filming the episode in question at Loseley Park, a real estate in Surrey that is anything but a cottage. Only two other actors were involved: Billy Boyle and Susan Brown who play My Cottage’s housekeepers, Mr and Mrs Crabtree. ‘It was magical,’ Thompson tells Netflix, comparing filming to shooting a short film. ‘[Yerin and I] were just getting to know each other as actors as well as the characters.’

And while they are indeed just getting to know each other, there is a scene involving a lake that has a ‘steamy’ result, Ha teases. ‘I hope people are feeling a little sweaty, like they might need to go for a swim and cool down,’ adds showrunner Jess Brownell. ‘Even though that lake was cold, it gets hot!’

Inside Loseley Park

Loseley Park is a 1,400 acre plot of rolling countryside, with Tudor manor Loseley House the jewel in the crown. Located just three miles south of Guildford, the manor was built between 1562 and 1568, and is far from a cottage, as Benedict calls it.

Privately owned by the More-Molyneux family (and kept in the same family for more than 500 years now), inside there’s The Great Hall with panelling from Henry VIII’s banqueting tents, George IV’s coronation chair, and wood carvings by Grinling Gibbons, while The Drawing Room boasts a monumental fireplace by Hombein and cushions reputed to have been worked by Queen Elizabeth I.

As well as Bridgerton, films including The Favourite (2018) and Rebecca (2020) were shot here, as well as TV shows like The Crown and Belgravia. Because it is privately owned, you can’t just rock up at Loseley Park to snap some pictures, though the gorgeous gardens are open to the public on specific days. Here you’ll find more than 1,000 rose bushes, an extensive herb garden and a maze of pathways in foliage – all fit for a timeless romance. Where Else?

Netflix did something a little different to previous seasons when shooting Bridgeton season 4: it avoided Bath entirely. As Bridgerton has soared in popularity over the years, filming in the pretty Roman town has increased in difficulty, with crowds of fans posing a real risk to the show’s progress. Previously, iconic sites like the Royal Crescent and the Assembly Rooms were used for filming, standing in for Regency Mayfair where the Ton is supposed to be located. Instead, when you think you are seeing Bath on screen this time around, what you are actually seeing is an intricately crafted set built at Shepperton Studios in Surrey.

That said, real locations in London are also used in Bridgerton – perhaps most notably Ranger’s House in Greenwich, which is the Bridgerton family household (decorated with romantic purple wisteria).

Elsewhere, historic houses like Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire and Hampton Court Palace in Surrey, and the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich are also familiar favourites.
