Hot weather wardrobe, sorted
British summertime has arrived. And while there’s plenty of reason to celebrate the arrival of sunshine, my attention shifts to that one age-old question: what will I wear? While you can get away with the bare minimum at home, going beyond the front door will require one or two layers more than wanted. Us Brits know better than to scoff at the weather – a heatwave at home often feels a hundred times hotter than the same degree abroad – and in between rounds of SPF, sunglasses and handheld fans we make sure we’re armed with a capsule wardrobe of summer dresses that we can pull on year after year. And with heatwave season now in full swing, we’re gearing up for our most stylish summer yet.
But what exactly makes a summer dress the optimum choice for hot weather? If, like me, you dread the thought of burnt shoulders and kneecaps, it would be a lightweight fit with cap sleeves and a maxi skirt. Others, meanwhile, will feel most stylish (and aired out) in a mini dress with dainty straps. And let’s not forget the in-between midi dress: not as stifling as a long sleeve or skirt, but modest enough to see you through a day in the office without a dress code violation.
And then there’s colours, prints and patterns to consider. Summer calls for bolder and brighter tones – tomato red, zesty orange and vivid sorbet hues – with the occasional mix of summer whites (good for keeping cool) and simple black dresses creating plenty of choice for the season. And if you’re thinking print, you’re in luck. You’ll find all the classics this summer – tropical fauna and flora will never go out of fashion – as well as plenty of new season favourites: beachside stripes, neutral polka dots and playful animal prints.
So what are you waiting for? Don’t let the heatwave get away without braving a (slightly sweaty) walk through the park in one of these pretty summer dresses.
