The coming-of-age drama has proven to be a global hit. Here's what we can expect next
Just as the season finale of The Testaments dropped on Disney+, the streaming giant delivered some welcome news for fans of the dystopian drama: a second season is officially confirmed. The announcement, made on 20 May 2026, signals Bruce Miller’s ambitious spin-off from The Handmaid’s Tale has a similarly long-running future ahead. With viewers discovering Agnes (Chase Infiniti) and Daisy (Lucy Halliday) week after week, and the numbers steadily climbing, it’s clear that this coming-of-age tale set in Gilead has struck a significant chord. Here’s what we’ve got in store for season 2.

The Testaments Season 2: Plot, Cast, Release Date & More
From the moment The Testaments premiered on Disney+ and Hulu earlier this year, it captured the imaginations of a growing audience, with new episodes dropping weekly. The streaming numbers tell a compelling story: over 45 million hours have been watched globally, with viewership growing week on week. Most strikingly, views for episode 8 were up 76 percent from the premiere – a marked increase that suggests momentum building rather than waning interest. Eventually the 10-episode season garnered the coveted ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes at 88 percent approval, a strong indicator of both critical and audience approval.
Despite, on paper, treading similar ground to The Handmaid’s Tale, The Testaments has done well to reinvent the setting. Where the original series showcased rebellion and survival, The Testaments is more of a dramatic coming-of-age story that follows young teens Agnes and Daisy as they navigate Aunt Lydia’s (Ann Dowd) elite preparatory school for future wives. In those gilded halls, where obedience is instilled with brutal efficiency, their bond becomes the catalyst for upheaval — theirs, and potentially Gilead’s.
Created by showrunner Bruce Miller, who also shepherded The Handmaid’s Tale through its acclaimed run, The Testaments draws from Margaret Atwood’s Booker Prize-winning novel of the same name. But The Testaments builds on Atwood’s world visually, emotionally and thematically, giving close attention to the interior lives of two young women whilst simultaneously exploring the broader mechanics of Gilead as a system. The production team, including executive producers Warren Littlefield, Elisabeth Moss, Steve Stark, and director Mike Barker, will almost certainly continue overseeing the series after the success of season 1.

Season 2 Plot
Atwood’s novel provides the foundation for season 1, but the book’s rich narrative landscape offers plenty of material for future seasons. Readers of The Testaments will already know that there are significant plot threads left to explore — particularly regarding Agnes and Daisy’s trajectories as they grow older and their influence within Gilead expands.
The surprise guest appearance by Elisabeth Moss, reprising her role as June, was precisely the kind of moment that delighted long-time fans whilst also serving as a narrative bridge between the two series. The dual narrative structure of Atwood’s novel, told partly through testimony and historical retrospectives, also opens creative possibilities for how Miller might develop the story further.
While there’s certainly a plot, season 1 was also very character led: the moral compromises, the small rebellions, the bonds that form in impossible circumstances. Season 2 will likely continue in that vein, deepening these characters whilst the stakes, as always in Gilead, continue to rise.

Where Was It Filmed?
Season one of The Testaments was filmed in and around Toronto, Ontario, especially at Chelster Hall in Oakville, a sprawling, 43,850 sqft mansion that stands in for the Aunt Lydia School. One of Canada’s most expensive estates, Chelster Hall is home to eight bedrooms, 13 bathrooms, and a 7,000-bottle wine cellar – but of course there’s much less fun to be had in the world of Gilead.

Release Date
Season 1 production and release timelines suggest that if production on season 2 begins reasonably soon, audiences could see new episodes sometime in 2027 — though this is speculation based on typical production schedules. Much will depend on the availability of cast and crew, and how quickly scripts are developed. Given the momentum from season 1, there’s every reason to believe Disney+ will prioritise getting the series back into production.
