Barbour Teams Up With House Of Hackney For AW23 Collection

Barbour is taking us back to the English countryside with its latest collection, which uses new prints from House of Hackney depicting Britain’s native flora. Building on the season’s ongoing gothic movement, the collection creates a narrative where dark gardens bloom, romances unfurl and bohemian maximalism reigns.

‘As champions of homegrown craftsmanship we have a lot in common with Barbour, and our prints, inspired by the beauty of Nature, are perfectly matched to a brand synonymous with the English countryside,’ said Frieda Gormley, co-founder of House of Hackney.

Speaking of prints, the new collection will also mark the debut of three floral patterns created by the two brands. The first, Papavera, comes from House of Hackney’s new ‘Gothic Garden’ collection and builds upon the Art Nouveau fascination with Japanese design, depicting bouquets of gothic poppies with accents of amber and periwinkle. The second pattern, Opia, taken from the word ‘opiate’, embodies a more bohemian style with painterly midnight-blue poppies on a bright bronze background. Midnight Garden, the last pattern to come from the collaboration, takes inspiration from Dutch Masters by depicting a country garden after dark – a blooming landscape made up of pinks, greens, off-whites and blues.

What Will Be In The Collection?

The collection itself will be comprised of dresses, shirts and Barbour’s signature wax and quilted jackets – all of which feature the new prints created by House of Hackney.

Design Notes

Dresses, which adopt a more cottagecore, vintage feel, come in slimmer silhouettes with self-tie bowknots at the neck and long slightly puffed sleeves, while shirts and jumpers feature all-over prints in maximalist proportions. Barbour has also introduced its first waxed hat with the new collection, which comes with a black waxed outer and either an Opia or Midnight Garden patterned lining.

Two reversible quilts are also included in the collection, with one side adopting the classic Barbour quilt and the other showing off the Opia or Papavera print. These jackets feature a corduroy collar and large patch pockets (perfect for storing away valuables on country walks). If you can’t get enough of the quilting, you’re in luck; the collaboration will also feature a quilted cape available in black or khaki, with a Midnight Garden lining.

Wax jackets, naturally, also play a big part for AW23. Longer wax jackets designed for traditional weather come with raglan sleeves and bellow pockets, featuring an Opia print lining. Shorter wax jackets, meanwhile, come with a built-in cape and black waxed cotton outer.

Other outerwear includes a long, single breasted trench coat, a showerproof design that comes with a waist belt, epaulettes and an Opia lining, as well as a shorter length jacket that features a shiny black sheen and a velvet patterned jacket available in Opia and Papavera.
