Think coats, jackets and sleeves, as well as unseen layers like slips and thermals (a key staple come November).
The former, Alice tells us, is something we really should try to get right at a wedding. ‘You’ll need a coat, or at the very least a jacket,’ she says. ‘And rather than adding one as an after-thought, I find the best approach for autumn weddings is to make the coat or jacket the focal point of your look.’ She adds that details like ‘military-inspired frog closure buttons, silk fringing and brocade’ are big trends for Autumn/Winter 2026, alongside styles spanning ‘vintage-inspired, faux fur-trimmed long silk kimonos – so elegant over a dress for an autumn wedding – and velvet opera-style coats.’
And despite the added pocket space a coat might provide, you’ll still need some kind of bag for your valuables. Alice’s top pick? A vintage throwback. ‘A beautiful silk, tassel-trimmed pouch bag,’ she emphasises. ‘Its wrist-friendly straps make them perfect for autumn weddings.’

More layers means more planning, says Alice. ‘The need for layers means there’s more to think about than with a summer wedding where you can throw on a dress and go,’ she explains. ‘Planning further ahead than you might with a summer wedding helps avoid last-minute, overly casual coat-inducing panic. The beginning of September is a great time to shop for autumn weddings before all the best hero pieces of Autumn/Winter collections sell out.’
Opt For Clever Layers
Speaking of layers – don’t underestimate the power of a good set of thermals. ‘Thermals under your dress are my autumn wedding secret weapon,’ emphasises Alice. ‘M&S does a great thermal bodysuit that doesn’t make lines under dresses and has saved me from shivering in many a churchyard.’
Curate Your Coat
Outer layers should also be a key consideration. ‘Your coat or jacket should match the rest of your outfit in smartness,’ highlights the stylist. ‘Don’t ruin a beautiful dress by throwing a mismatched, casual coat on top as an afterthought.’

And for finishing touches? ‘Headgear-wise, now’s the time to make the switch from anything raffia or straw in style to hats made from felts and velvets. Anything raffia looks too summery beyond September, in my opinion,’ says Alice.
