Be at the top of your fashion game this tennis season
Wimbledon is just around the corner – and as one of the biggest sporting events of the social season, what you wear is almost as important as the tennis itself. Despite being more informal than other events, a sense of occasion surrounds the grounds and it is advisable to dress smartly, especially if you have Centre Court tickets. Stuck for ideas? Here’s what to wear to Wimbledon 2026.
Wimbledon: A Style Guide
There are few sporting events that rally the capital quite like Wimbledon. Rooted in British tradition, the Championships date back nearly 150 years and continue to be a highlight on the summer social calendar. And with more than 500,000 people attending annually, it’s a huge event – one you wouldn’t want to miss.
But besides the smell of freshly cut grass, the clinking of champagne glasses and the pots of fresh strawberries, one of Wimbledon’s greatest charms is its fashion. ‘I love the quintessentially British mood that Wimbledon brings – from royalty to A-list celebrities, it’s such a wonderful mix of people and personal style,’ says stylist Annie Swain. ‘There’s always a strong sense of tradition, with nods to classic tailoring: pleated shirts, blazers, polos, and a palette of creams, navy, and sage green, perhaps with a touch of polka dot thrown in. The men often look wonderfully dapper in Fitzgerald-esque summer suits and pocket squares, while women embrace simple co-ords, neutral suiting and floaty dresses that feel feminine, elegant, and practical for the heat.’
And while there have been plenty of changes over the years, it’s one of the few summer events that still feels sartorially British. ‘There’s definitely been a cooler, younger crowd attending,’ Annie notes, ‘but Wimbledon still maintains that timeless courtside chic. The style feels slightly more relaxed and fashion-forward now, while still respecting the event’s classic elegance and understated dress codes.’

A Stylist’s Top Tips: What To Wear To Wimbledon
Below, stylist Annie Swain shares her top tips for Wimbledon dressing.
Prepare For All Weathers
‘Prepare for all weathers – it’s Britain, after all,’ says Annie. Whatever the forecast says on the morning of your visit, plan for sunshine, cloud cover and the occasional shower in equal measure.
Choose Your Footwear Wisely
‘Footwear is key,’ Annie advises. ‘Choose something smart yet comfortable enough for walking around all day.’ You’ll be on your feet for longer than you expect, so a block heel or polished flat will serve you far better than a stiletto on uneven ground.
Don’t Forget Sunglasses & A Hat
‘Sunglasses and hats are essential – both for the elements and for looking effortlessly chic, especially when the camera pans your way,’ says Annie. Practical style at its finest.
Opt For Cashmere Layers
‘A lightweight cashmere jumper draped over the shoulders is always a good idea as temperatures can change quickly,’ Annie explains. It’s not just for comfort – this is a look that will always read as very Wimbledon.
Factor In The Heat
‘Choose breathable, non-creasing fabrics like linen blends to stay polished in the heat,’ says Annie. ‘Bear in mind that you’ll likely be sitting for long periods, so fabrics that crease heavily can quickly look less polished. Lean into breathable tailoring and relaxed linen pieces instead.’
But Don’t Show Too Much Skin
‘Avoid anything overly flashy or too revealing – cameras are everywhere, and Wimbledon is ultimately about understated elegance,’ Annie warns.
Is There A Dress Code?
While there is no strict dress code for Wimbledon, the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) encourages a smart and respectful dress style for spectators attending the tournament. Traditionally, spectators at Wimbledon tend to dress up for the event, although more formal dress is required for the Royal Box, Centre Court and Court Number One.
The only things spectators are strictly prohibited from wearing are ‘ambush marketing’ clothing (this refers to anything with your company logo on it) and political slogans. You should also avoid wearing overly casual or beachwear-style clothing, such as shorts, flip-flops or t-shirts with offensive slogans.
One of the only times spectators are expected to follow a few rules at Wimbledon is if they find themselves in the Royal Box. Protocol dictates that spectators dress smartly – think a suit jacket and tie for men, and a sophisticated dress for women (just look to the Princess of Wales for inspiration). Women are also discouraged from wearing hats while in the Royal Box, as this may obscure the vision of those seated behind them.
