We're feeling a little blue this year
Those of you keeping a close eye on the runway will have spotted one colour making quite the splash this season. An ultra vibrant shade of blue, coined as ‘knight blue’ by British fashion label Burberry, is taking over fashion, makeup and beauty in one fell swoop.

What Is ‘Knight Blue’?
‘Knight blue’ is a bold, Yves Klein-esque shade of blue verging on ultramarine. While not exactly a brand new colour, the hue has recently acquired a rapidly-growing following thanks to luxury fashion house Burberry and its current Chief Creative Officer, Daniel Lee.
Following the announcement that Lee would be joining Burberry in September 2022, the designer set about putting his creative stamp on the House – starting with a brand new campaign, an AW23 collection and a new, revised logo of the Equestrian Knight (originally created by the brand in 1901). The knight, which was unveiled in a dazzling blue, is what gives the shade the title ‘knight blue’.
Since then, Burberry has set about making knight blue the brand’s new signature colour, popping up across collections, stores and even London tube stations (remember when Bond Street became ‘Burberry Street’ during London Fashion Week SS24?).

So, What Is Knight Blue Makeup?
Keeping the above in mind, knight blue makeup is simply ultra-bright blue beauty looks. This spans from graphic ultramarine eyeliners and a bold blue lip to hazy cobalt eyeshadow smudged out to the eyebrow line. Whichever feature you pick, the goal is to create a look with a vibrant colour pop befitting this new shade of Burberry blue.

The concept of blue makeup has a slightly nostalgic edge to it – think sparkly baby blue eyeshadow compacts and navy liquid liners teamed up with layers of black mascara and pink lip gloss. But a quick look at the SS24 runways shows how the colour is making a refined comeback, with the likes of Philipp Plein, Matty Bovan, Talia Byre and, of course, Burberry all channelling shades of blue in their beauty looks.
But what’s next for knight blue? Following in the footsteps of fashion and makeup, we predict a surge in knight blue nail polish and jewellery – tying in with the upcoming colour drenching trend for 2024, which will see us commit to an outfit centring on one bright colour.
