Performance and theatricality are back with a bang in fashion this year, as trends lean more towards bigger volumes, bolder colours and more playful concepts. Sound like fun? These are the biggest fashion trends for 2024:

1. Peach Fuzz
As per Pantone’s Colour of the Year assessment, things are looking peachy in 2024. While shades of blue, red and yellow have been popular over the last few months, the vibrancy of 2023 is set to give way to softer tones that inspire a sense of warmth. ‘Poetic and romantic, a clean peach tone with a vintage vibe, PANTONE 13-1023 Peach Fuzz reflects the past yet has been rephrased to have a contemporary ambiance,’ says Pantone. Think fluffy clouds, flowers at sunset and light rays peeking through blush-coloured feathers – all the romantic hues we’ve been missing this year.

2. Grandpacore
The great vintage revolution is still going strong for young fashion followers. And a great source of inspiration for our wardrobe? Our grandparents. But while we had Coastal Grandma last year, 2024 is all about your Grandpa’s style. As Pinterest noted in its annual prediction report, ‘In 2024, Gen Z and Boomers will embrace “grandpa core” and bring eccentric and expressive elements for the ages to their wardrobes. Think retro streetwear, chic cardigans and customised clothing.’ We’re putting our money on oversized knits and shirts, as well as staple tailoring and throwback accessories like bow ties, brooches and suspenders.

3. Jellyfish Silhouettes
Similarly swimming into 2023 is all things jellyfish. ‘A whole mood will bubble up in 2024, inspired by your favourite invertebrate: jellyfish,’ notes Pinterest. Think layered and floaty skirts, with oversized ruffles and loose tendrils, as well as plenty of puff sleeves and vibrant, aquatic colours. Let the oceanic coup commence.

4. Sweeping Shoes
While there’s plenty of fun going on up top when it comes to runway shows, we tend to forget that the other half of the fun is usually at our feet – but not in 2024. This burgeoning shoe trend is putting the drama back into footwear, with styles that toe the line of maximalism in ultra fun ways. Think diamante chandelier tassels, 3D bows, streamer and metallic swathes of fabric. Perfect for parties (or making a statement out in town).

5. Hot Pants
And how best to show off your shiny new shoes? Ditch the hemline. Whatever you want to call them – briefs, short-shorts, hot pants, teeny tiny knickers – they’re set to take over in a big way come 2024. If you’re still unsure, you can take a leaf out of Kendall Jenner’s book and team yours up with a sheer pair of tights and a cosy knit (a litter counterproductive, we know, but it’s for the aesthetic).

6. Bow Stacking
So, the truth is out: we like big bows and we cannot lie. You would have been hard-pressed to avoid bows on the runway in 2023, with both AW23 and SS24 shows sending models down the runway decked out in a hoard of ribbons. ‘Millennials and Gen Z will adorn their outfits, shoes, hair and jewellery with this oh-so-delicate detail,’ says Pinterest. ‘Bow large or bow small, next year brings bows for all.’

7. Street-Savvy Ballgown
And lastly, another one for the romantics among us: ballgowns (or rather, their skirts). This trend is set to make protagonist Y/N dreams a reality with its theatrical appeal – think full, layered skirts – while still remaining appropriate for the 21st century thanks to the incorporation of modern colour palettes, tailoring and quirky silhouettes.
