Low-maintenance waves make this hairstyle a salon favourite

Boasting effortless waves, a relaxed look and (perhaps best of all) a low-maintenance styling routine, the ripple bob is this season’s go-to cut. Here’s how to get yours in the salon – and style it at home.

What Is A Ripple Bob?

‘A ripple bob is a modern twist on the classic bob, defined by its soft, undulating waves that give the hair a fluid, textured movement,’ explains Jason Collier, celebrity hairstylist and founder of Studio23. ‘It’s not about tight curls or poker-straight strands, it’s that in-between ripple that looks effortless and undone.

‘It’s this texture that sets it apart from other bob styles,’ he continues. ‘Traditional bobs are often sleek and structured, whereas the ripple bob is all about softness and flow. It’s got a more relaxed edge, which makes it feel cooler and more contemporary.’ Think Alexa Chung’s soft, tousled strands or Hailey Bieber’s choppier cut. ‘They both wear it in that effortlessly chic way that has definitely helped bring it into the spotlight.’

But what really makes it a standout for summer is how easy it is to style and wear. ‘People are craving low-maintenance, wearable hair that still makes a statement, and the ripple bob fits that perfectly,’ confirms Jason. ‘It gives off that “I woke up like this” vibe, but with a little bit of polish. It’s versatile, flattering and doesn’t feel over-styled, which is exactly what everyone wants right now.’

Who Suits This Cut?

‘The ripple bob is really inclusive as it works beautifully on fine hair, giving the illusion of more volume, and looks just as stunning on thicker textures by enhancing natural movement,’ emphasises Jason. ‘It flatters most face shapes, but works particularly well on oval, heart and square faces. The key is adjusting the length and wave placement to suit your individual features.’

How To Ask For A Ripple Bob In The Salon

When it comes to asking your stylist for the cut, Jason recommends you: ‘Ask your stylist for a bob that’s slightly textured with soft waves rather than a blunt cut. Bringing in photos is always a great idea. The visual references help your stylist understand exactly what kind of movement and length you’re after. It’s also helpful to arrive with your natural texture so your stylist can see how your hair behaves.’

How To Style A Ripple Bob

Less is more when it comes to styling a ripple bob, Jason tells us. ‘Use a heat tool like a flat iron or wand to create subtle bends, alternating the direction to keep it natural,’ he instructs. ‘Always leave the ends slightly straighter to avoid it looking too curled. Finish with a texturising spray or light cream to enhance separation and movement.’

What Next?

‘I think we’ll see the ripple bob getting even more playful,’ predicts Jason. ‘Think micro-length versions or layered, choppier cuts with exaggerated ripples. It’s the kind of style that evolves with trends but still keeps that relaxed, wearable energy at its core.’
