Hairs ideas for every veil length
Wedding planning is in full swing. You’ve sent out the invites, booked the venue and even found a wedding dress (or two) you can’t wait to wear. Now it all comes down to the details – which includes the hair. But before you pick out a bridal hairstyle, there’s one thing you need to ask yourself first: will you be wearing a veil?
For many, a veil offers the finishing touch for a bridal look – especially when teamed up with the right hairstyle. ‘A veil has a unique way of elevating a bridal look from beautiful to truly unforgettable,’ says Inanch Emir, hair expert and founder of luxury extensions salon INANCH London. ‘It introduces softness, movement and a sense of romance that feels timeless, yet deeply personal. It also frames the hair in a way that enhances the overall silhouette.’
‘Whether it’s a delicate sheer veil or something more dramatic, it creates a beautiful silhouette and photographs incredibly well, adding that timeless, romantic quality that many brides are looking for,’ adds Melissa Timperley, celebrity hair stylist and founder of Melissa Salons.
But, as so often is the case with all wedding planning, it’s a little more difficult to nail the right hair and veil combo. ‘Choosing a wedding hairstyle with a veil can feel trickier than you might expect, especially if it’s your first time wearing one,’ admits Suzie McGill, international artistic director at Rainbow Room International. ‘A veil isn’t just an accessory; it moves with you, frames your face, and becomes part of your overall look.’
While it’s a lot to consider, brides need not worry. Below, we’ve rounded up the experts’ top tips on choosing a hairstyle for the big day, as well as plenty of veil inspiration to get your mood board started.
How To Do Wedding Hair With A Veil
If you know you want to wear a veil on your wedding day, then this is the place to start when choosing a hairstyle. ‘The hairstyle should be designed with the veil in mind from the outset, rather than added as an afterthought,’ emphasises Melissa. ‘The key is to think about placement and proportion. Placing the veil lower, for example beneath a bun or half up style, allows the hair detail to remain visible, while a higher placement can create more volume and drama. Choosing lighter, sheer veils can also help ensure the hairstyle still shows through, particularly if you’ve opted for texture, braids or waves that you want to highlight.’
‘Balance is everything,’ adds Inanch. ‘The veil and the hair should work in harmony, not compete for attention. If a veil is intricate or statement-making, I tend to keep the hairstyle more refined and polished. Conversely, a simpler veil allows the hair to take centre stage with more texture or volume.’
And, if in doubt, make sure to book in a few practice sessions with a stylist ahead of time to iron out any uncertainties. ‘The key is to plan and do a trial, so both your hair and veil feel comfortable, secure, and effortlessly cohesive on the day to avoid any unnecessary stress,’ notes Suzie. ‘Placement is key, so bringing the veil to your hair trial is really helpful to see how it sits with your chosen style. Also consider how it interacts with your dress and other accessories; the veil should enhance the overall look, not hide details you love.’
What To Avoid
While there aren’t any major dos and don’ts with wedding hair – aside from the guidelines outlined by experts above – there are a few things worth being wary of. ‘When it comes to choosing a veil, there are some things to keep in mind, so it works with your hairstyle rather than causing stress on the day,’ emphasises Suzie. ‘Think about the length, weight, and style of the veil; a heavy or heavily embellished veil may only be comfortable for part of the day, while a lighter veil can be worn throughout.’
One of the biggest mistakes many brides make is choosing a hairstyle that doesn’t support the veil securely, says Inanch. ‘One of the biggest mistakes is overlooking the foundation. If the hair isn’t structured correctly, the veil won’t sit securely or comfortably throughout the day.’
She adds that it’s also important to avoid overly intricate styles, as these ‘can lose their impact once the veil is placed’. ‘Brides should think about how the look will transition when the veil is removed, ensuring the hairstyle still feels complete for the evening,’ advises Melissa. ‘Weather is another consideration, as wind or humidity can impact both the veil and the hair, so the style needs to be practical as well as beautiful.’

Bohemian Waves
A veil moment also lends itself well to more low-maintenance hairstyles. ‘Loose waves with a mid length veil offer a more relaxed, romantic feel,’ says Melissa. ‘The veil can be placed higher at the crown for a softer, ethereal look, making it perfect for outdoor weddings, beach settings or more modern celebrations.’
‘This look is relaxed, soft and romantic,’ adds Inanch. ‘It really suits countryside or beach weddings, as it feels very effortless and natural.’

Half-Up, Half Down
For something in between, Melissa suggests: ‘A half-up, half-down style with delicate texture is ideal for brides who want the best of both worlds. The veil can be secured into the top section, allowing the length and movement of the hair to still be seen. This suits a wide range of venues, from rustic barns to elegant city spaces.’

High Bun
Your bun doesn’t need to sit low to make an impact, though. ‘A high, structured bun paired with a dramatic veil has a regal feel; it’s bold but never overwhelming,’ says Suzie. ‘Great for large venues or traditional church weddings, it gives presence and height while keeping the look polished. It’s one of those styles where you can really play with the veil itself, letting it make a visual statement without competing too much with the hair.’

Low Bun
‘A low chignon with a veil placed underneath is a timeless choice that allows the bun to remain visible while the veil flows effortlessly behind,’ notes Melissa.’
‘It frames the face beautifully and keeps everything looking sharp, which is perfect for city or indoor venues where the bride wants style and elegance without fuss,’ adds Suzie. ‘It’s simple, but there’s a quiet sophistication that feels perfect for the modern bride.’

Voluminous Curls
And for something with volume, Suzie recommends opting for full-bodied curls on your wedding day. ‘I love soft, bouncy curls with the veil pinned just below the crown; it feels effortless, like the hair and veil are moving together naturally,’ she says. ‘For a garden wedding or an outdoor ceremony, it’s beautiful when the breeze lifts the curls and the veil slightly, giving a sense of life and movement.’

Soft Waves
For an effortlessly chic look, opt for soft Hollywood-style waves. ‘Loose, brushed-out waves with a cathedral-length veil create something ethereal without feeling forced,’ highlights Suzie. ‘It’s the kind of style where hair and the veil just work in perfect harmony, and work well for venues that are grand, historic spaces. The veil drapes naturally over the waves, so the bride looks elegant in motion, whether walking down the aisle or moving around the room.’

Low Bun
And for a classic, regal look, Inanch suggests a low bun paired with a hooded veil. ‘The hair itself is understated elegance at its best,’ she says. ‘And this style leaves enough space to make more of a statement with your veil. Soft, romantic detailing helps keep the look modern; perfect for classic weddings.’
