The Winners In Brief

As anticipated, it was a big evening for Mr Bates vs The Post Office, ITV’s dramatisation of the headline-dominating post office scandal, which spurred the government to enact justice for the victims. Accepting the prize for Limited Series, producer Patrick Spence said the series ‘only had the impact it did because the people that watched it stood up and demanded action with rage,’ and that its impact proves the British public ‘cannot abide liars and bullies’.

Lead stars Toby Jones and Monica Dolan missed out on acting commendations, though. Instead, shining newcomer Marisa Abela bagged Leading Actress for her work in Industry, while both Leading Actor and Supporting Actor were snapped up by the BBC’s Bernadine Evaristo adaptation, Mr Loverman – that’s Lennie James and Ariyon Bakare respectively. Elsewhere, winners include Sky’s Mr Bigstuff, Alma’s Not Normal and, on its final victory lap, Baby Reindeer.

But the biggest winner of the evening is the BBC, which bagged 18 of the possible 27 awards up for grabs. This includes wins across factual productions, dramas, comedies, soaps, sport and more. ‘I’m incredibly proud that BAFTA recognised the BBC with a phenomenal 18 awards across such a range of categories showcasing the sheer quality of our programmes in every genre,’ the BBC’s chief content officer Charlotte Moore says on the news. ‘It’s been a year of outstanding creativity on the BBC and all the winners demonstrate our unwavering commitment to backing homegrown storytelling and talent, and bringing people together for unmissable events. I’d like to congratulate all the winners for their exceptional work.’

Here’s the winner’s list in full.

Reflection On The Nominations

Baby Reindeer is leading the show with four nominations (and four more in the craft categories), joined by Mr Bates vs The Post Office with four (including Memorable Moment), Rivals with three (also up for Memorable Moment) and Slow Horses and Say Nothing with three each, too.

The Leading Actor category is stacked with generational talent: David Tennant, Gary Oldman, Lennie James, Martin Freeman and Toby Jones are all tapped for the award, joined by newcomer Richard Gadd for his semi autobiographical Netflix drama Baby Reindeer. In the sister Leading Actress category, it’s slightly more of a mixed bag: industry stalwarts Anna Maxwell Martin, Sharon D Clarke, Monica Dolan and Billie Piper are joined by newcomers Lola Petticrew and Marisa Abela (though the latter has received a BAFTA Film nomination before).  And it’s a double nomination for Dolan, who’s also tapped for Supporting Actress for her work in Sherwood.

Who Was Snubbed?

Wondering who’s missing? Netflix’s Bridgerton was been snubbed from all but the Memorable Moment category (which was won by Strictly Come Dancing), with season 3 lead Nicola Coughlan nominated for her performance in Big Mood in the female comedy category.

There’s no love lost for streamers. Netflix’s One Day might have been nominated for Limited Series (which was won, perhaps inevitably, by Mr Bates vs The Post Office), but there were no acting commendations for Leo Woodall and Ambika Mod despite acclaim from audiences. Apple TV’s beloved Slow Horses missed out on prizes for all three of its nominations. Disney’s Jilly Cooper romp Rivals missed out in both the categories it was nominated, as did the streamer’s explosive Troubles drama Say Nothing. Shogun, however, took home the trophy for International Series.

Wolf Hall was also royally snubbed: it missed out on Drama Series, with the BBC’s Belfast cop drama Blue Lights taking home the gong. Damian Lewis’ turn as King Henry VIII was nominated in the Supporting Actor category, but Ariyon Bakare took home that prize for his work on fellow BBC book adaptation Mr Loverman. Lead star Mark Rylance, meanwhile, never got a look in.

Elsewhere, despite its roaring success, The Traitors missed out on a prize in all three categories it was nominated.
