What to expect from 2024's floral affair

Everyone’s going barmy for blossom this season, but our eyes are looking a little further ahead as a tinge of warmth enters the air: to our favourite annual floral affair, Chelsea in Bloom. Running alongside the world-famous RHS Chelsea Flower Show, this free annual community-focussed festival is produced by Cadogan with the Royal Horticultural Society (the RHS), and sees the squares, streets and facades of Chelsea transformed with beautiful flower displays; in 2023, more than 90 shops, restaurants, hotels and florists took part. Here’s what to expect in 2024.

When Is Chelsea In Bloom 2024?

This year, Chelsea in Bloom is taking place from 20–26 May 2024.

As in previous years, RHS judges will collaborate with a lifestyle judge to award Gold, Silver, Bronze and Merit Awards to participants, as well as the top awards, Best Floral Display, Highly Commended and the Innovation Award. Winners will be announced on Tuesday 21 May 2024.

The ‘People’s Champion’, however, will be decided by the public via online voting, opening on Monday 20 May and closing on Thursday 23 May 2024.

What Is The Theme?

The 2024 Chelsea in Bloom theme is ‘Floral Feasts’, encouraging participants to draw inspiration for their displays from culinary favourites and memorable foodie scenes and characters across film, literature, history and art. The full line-up of large scale installations is still to-be-revealed, but early hints include an enormous floral ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ on Sloane Square created by floral artist All For Love London. We’re expecting further mouthwatering creations from hotels, boutiques and eateries across the borough.

In 2023, the theme was ‘Flowers on Film’, inspiring incredible installations spanning characters and storylines that have graced the big screen, to cinematic awards and the neighbourhood’s cinematic heritage. On Pavilion Road, this was expressed with a huge Oscars statue created with plants, while guests at The Carlton Tower Jumeirah were ushered inside by a giant ‘Carlton Kong’.
