Edible candles are a thing now, apparently

First we had butter boards, and now TikTok has gone mad for the butter candle. It’s essentially just a way of making butter more exciting by rolling it into a candle shape and adding an edible wick to create that melting effect – but anything that involves lots of crusty bread gets our vote. It’s a great addition to any dinner party too, particularly around the festive season when we’re all craving cosy comfort food. So how can we get involved with this delicious trend?

What Is A Butter Candle?

A butter candle is exactly what it says on the tin: an edible candle made from butter. The creation started doing the rounds on TikTok a while ago, but now winter is back they’re popping up on For You pages aplenty again. It’s unclear who coined the term, but one of the early adopters was @sooziethefoodie, who told the New York Times in an interview last year that her guests ‘literally freaked out’ when they realized they could dip their baguettes into the burning candles. Since then, the platform has been awash with variations on the trend: from vegan alternatives to seasoned creations and different shapes.

How To Make A Butter Candle

It’s pretty simple. You’ll just need a block of butter (salted is best), a loaf of bread and an edible wick – you can buy these or create one using a piece of food-safe string – plus a paper cup (or similar container, such as an ice cube tray or baking mould).

@feelgoodfoodie Make a butter candle for your next party. AD It’s so easy to make with just a paper cup, candle wick and #danishcreamery Rosemary Salt Butter, which is made with rich, European-quality butter and specialty herbs and salts. It’s a slightly elevated butter, perfect for charcuterie and grazing boards, snacking, or in your favorite recipes. Method:

  1. Start by cutting a hole in the middle of your loaf of bread, which is the same size as your paper cup or container.
  2. Next, melt a block of butter over a low heat on the stove.
  3. Pour the liquid into a container (a paper cup works well) and place your edible wick inside.
  4. Freeze it for one hour.
  5. Cut the cup off, and there you have it: a candle made from butter.
  6. Place it into your loaf, and when you’re ready light the wick.
  7. Leave it for around 10 minutes, then start tearing off chunks of crusty bread and dipping away.

Top tip: Use two chopsticks to centre the wick and hold it in place while it sets.

Fancy jazzing up your creation? You can add extra flavouring to your liquid creation, such as some minced or roasted garlic, herbs, paprika or lemon. Happy dipping.
