The shortlist is in

There’s no greater pleasure than tucking into a hot, salty helping of chips and crispy battered fish – particularly if you’re by the seaside. Whether you like yours with a squeeze of lemon, dripping in vinegar or paired with a side of mushy peas, you’ll find some of the best fish and chips in the world in Britain. It’s our undisputed national dish, which some believe was first served in east London by a man named Joseph Malin back in 1860 (others claim it originated in Lancashire).

Either way, us Brits have nailed the combination, with an endless stream of top-class chippies dotted around the country. But which are the very best? The finalists for the 2024 Fish and Chip Takeaway of the Year award are in; find out below if your local has made the cut.

Fish and Chip Takeaway of the Year 2024: The Finalists

Each year, the National Fish and Chip Awards crowns fish and chip shops across the UK, with categories including Fish and Chip Takeaway of the Year, Fish and Chip Restaurant of the Year, and Best Newcomer Award. The shortlist for the former has just been announced, highlighting some of the best fish and chip takeaways, with regions including Wales, Essex and Scotland faring high, and just one spot making the cut in London (Stones Fish and Chips in Acton).

Andrew Crook, President at the National Federation of Fish Friers (yes, really!) who organises the awards, said: ‘Fish and Chip Takeaway of the Year is a notoriously difficult category to stand out in, but the panel of experts had many tough decisions to make. However, we’ve selected an exceptional shortlist that showcases the unwavering passion, dedication and excitement that the fish and chip industry brings to British culture.’

The winner will be announced on 28 February 2024. In the meantime, here are this year’s finalists.
