Plus, all the winners from the evening

Another weekend, another awards show – awards season is in full swing, and the latest prestigious ceremony took place last night with the 75th Emmy Awards. Celebrating the crème de la crème in TV entertainment, the night was a big one for the likes of Succession, The Bear, Beef and, everyone’s favourite holiday drama, The White Lotus. Here are all the highlights (and Emmy Award winners) you might have missed.

A Guide To Awards Season

Jennifer Coolidge Delivers Yet Another Iconic Speech At The Emmys

With two highly-acclaimed seasons under its belt (and a third on its way), The White Lotus has secured itself a place amongst TV royalty at this year’s awards season. Last year, the show bagged five Emmy Awards (making it the most decorated at the show) – and while this year it only secured one award amongst 12 nominations, that one landed rather deservedly in the hands of Jennifer Coolidge.

Coolidge, who plays the eccentric Tanya McQuoid, has experienced something of a career renaissance since stepping into the world of The White Lotus. But while the star did thank The White Lotus creator Mike White for giving her a spot on the show, there was one very important group she had to thank for her success: the ‘evil gays’. (For those who have yet to watch season two of The White Lotus, this is an inside joke from the show – not an inappropriate jab at the LGBTQ+ community.)

‘I want to thank all the evil gays,’ said Coolidge in her acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress In A Drama Series. ‘I had a little dream in my little town and everyone said it was impractical and far-fetched, but it did happen after all – so don’t give up on your dream.’

The Bear, Succession & Beef Sweep The Emmys

As for the night’s major winners, quiet luxury trend-setter Succession and comedy chef drama The Bear led the awards with six major wins each, including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Comedy Series respectively.

Succession led the nominee count with 27 nominations in total (with 14 acting nominations, setting a tie with its record last year), also becoming the first series ever to receive three nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series.

Similarly, FX’s The Bear made a splash at the awards with 13 nominations and six major wins in total. This also marked Ayo Edebiri’s third acting award for the show this season, having previously won a Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award for her performance.

Breakout series Beef followed not too far behind with five wins, including Lead Actor and Lead Actress In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie which were awarded to Steven Yeun and Ali Wong – this accolade made Wong the first woman of Asian descent to win a lead acting Emmy.
