‘Townhouses often have a wonderful sense of character,’ note Sophie Eadie and Fi Crole, interior designers and founders of Eadie & Crole. ‘Their proportions, staircases and architectural details give you a beautiful starting point, while the different floors allow rooms to have their own mood and purpose. There is often a pleasing rhythm to the rooms in a classic townhouse.

‘Townhouse style is less about recreating a particular period and more about responding to the architecture with care. The most successful interiors have elegance and individuality, with enough softness and practicality to feel like home.’

Consider this guide your starting point, then curate your Instagram with following tastemakers you’ll want to keep a saved folder for. (And if you need a little more than a picture to inspire your country home interiors, make sure you check out our 50 best interior designers in the UK.)

How To Nail The Look, According To A Designer

Start With The Layout

‘Think about how you move between rooms, where furniture sits and how each space will be used,’ emphasise Sophie and Fi. ‘A beautiful room has to feel good to live in.’

Pay Attention To Architectural Details

‘Well-proportioned panelling, joinery, doors and cornices can give a room the quiet structure we associate with a townhouse,’ the designers add. ‘The details should suit the scale of the space.’

Layer Old & New

Don’t be afraid to mix, match and collect. ‘Antiques alongside contemporary pieces, and a mix of fabrics and textures, make an interior feel collected and personal rather than overly matched.’

Consider Lighting Early

‘A mix of picture lights, wall lights and lamps brings warmth and lets rooms change character throughout the day,’ recommend Sophie and Fi.

Use Colour To Create A Thread

And finally, think about the colour palette of your home. ‘Colours do not need to repeat exactly from room to room, but a shared undertone or recurring accent can make the house feel cohesive.’
