The Curriculum
Purposefully broad, the curriculum fosters children’s natural curiosity about the world. Through inspiring teaching and diverse opportunities, the school enables pupils of all abilities to pursue excellence. With a focus on cross-curricular learning, pupils are challenged to solve problems imaginatively and collaborate effectively, building confidence and the ability to think critically and create boldly.
Sport & The Arts
Pupils discover the joy of physical activity through an exceptional breadth of opportunity. With 600+ fixtures annually, all children compete regularly, learning sportsmanship, teamwork and resilience. Specialist coaching from reception and outstanding facilities help talent flourish; 2025 brought national titles in swimming, biathlon and judo. Beyond sport, creativity and innovation define the curriculum; unusually, from year three, pupils have weekly specialist-taught lessons in art, D&T, drama and music.
Pastoral Care
By feeling safe, valued and heard, pupils develop self-confidence and belief in their abilities. Taught in small classes, the school’s teachers and pastoral team know each child as an individual, celebrate their successes and nurture their wellbeing. Children flourish, equipped to express themselves openly and talk about their feelings, developing emotional resilience for life. Pupils aged 11 to 13 grow in maturity as role models to others, while the school’s no mobile phone policy allows them to remain children for longer.
Exit Destinations
Pupils consistently gain places at academically selective senior schools across the south east, with over 30 percent receiving scholarships. Pupils joined 18 different schools in 2025 and gained scholarships in academic, art, chess, dance, drama, music and sport. Part of the Caterham Family of Schools, year five pupils at The Hawthorns can benefit from an offer of a senior school place at Caterham School, without the need for an entrance exam.
Head Teacher’s Philosophy
My philosophy is to kindle in every child a love of learning while equipping them for life. In our warm, family atmosphere, we pursue academic excellence alongside activities that build confidence and character, fuelling enthusiasm and encouraging meaningful engagement with the world.
