Boo baskets are making spooky season even sweeter
Halloween isn’t traditionally associated with seasonal gifting – but the latest trend to take over TikTok says otherwise. Boo baskets are big news this autumn, and we’ve got all the intel on how to make one at home.
The Country & Town House Responsible Buyers’ Guide
What Is A Boo Basket?
A boo basket is essentially a gift package which can filled with autumnal and Halloween-themed treats – a bit like an Easter hamper or Christmas Eve box. Created to celebrate the arrival of fall, they’re a sweet seasonal gift for loved ones (or yourself, we’re not here to judge).
While now seen as quite a modern thing, boo baskets actually stem from Halloween booing (or ‘You’ve Been Boo’d’) which is thought to date back to the 90s. The American tradition involved secretly dropping off a bag of treats on your neighbour’s doorstep as a Halloween surprise, but has since expanded to include family and friends.
And while the latest iteration of the tradition may be fairly new, it’s quickly gaining steam. On TikTok, creators have made thousands of posts on the topic, posting aesthetic packing videos of personalised boo baskets for loved ones.

What Can You Put Inside Them?
The beauty of a boo basket is its versatility. The goal is to create the ultimate autumn care package, and can taken in several directions: cosy essentials for spending time indoors, wellness gifts for tackling the changing weather, kids’ back-to-school essentials and, of course, Halloween-themed treats for all ages. Think fluffy socks, candles, sweets, crafting kits, soft toys, blankets and slippers.

How To Build A Boo Basket
1. Find A Basket
Start by finding a basket, bucket or bag that fits the theme of your boo basket. You can use traditional wicker baskets, decorative boxes or even themed containers like pumpkin-shaped buckets. Make sure the container is large enough to hold all your goodies – you don’t want all the treats to fall out and ruin the effect.
2. Pick Your Treats
There are no tricks this year, only treats. Opt for crowd-pleasers like cosy socks, soft toys and sweets as your base, and then build up the basket with more personalised picks that the recipient will love. You could also include a note or card with a handwritten message for an extra special touch.

3. Incorporate Seasonal Decor
It’s also important to decorate your boo basket to really bring the autumnal theme together. You can add little details like mini pumpkins, ghost figurines and red leafy garlands to the sides and contents of your basket for a bit of oomph.
4. Make It A Surprise (And Pass It On)
Since this is a fairly new trend, it works as surprise gift for kids, partners, friends and family. Leave the boo basket in a place where your recipient will find it, and then watch on as they open all their seasonal treats.
Part of the tradition of a boo basket is to pass it on. When someone receives one, they’re meant to continue the fun and build one for another loved one. So, alongside your goodies, make sure you include a little note explaining the tradition so the recipient can keep the chain going.
