Claudia Winkleman Is Peak British Countrycore In The Traitors

You can't really go wrong with tweed, can you?

The second instalment of the BBC’s hotly anticipated reality show, The Traitors, hit small screens again this week – and with its return, we were gifted with another roundup of host Claudia Winkleman’s Highlands-approved wardrobe. A bit of a change from her usual glamour (à la Strictly Come Dancing), Winkleman’s Traitors outfits perfectly mirror the countryside locations that make up the show and have given rise to yet another micro-trend: British countrycore. Here’s how you can emulate the queen of (British) country style.

How Claudia Winkleman Channels British Countrycore In The Traitors

What Is British Countrycore?

Where countrycore may refer to cowboy boots, prairie sundresses and straw hats across the pond, its British cousin is all about facing the elements in style. (We are talking about the UK, where it rains for about 40 percent of the year on average, after all.) In essence, British countrycore is all about layering up the knits, donning some tweed, pulling on some wellies and throwing a big coat over it all – think dressed up farmer, but with an added dash of luxury branding and high quality fabrics.

Jokes aside, the trend celebrates many of the brands and crafts that make up the British fashion industry. We’re talking wax jackets from Barbour, wool knits hailing from the Scottish Highlands, reinforced waterproof boots (perfect for splashing in puddles), Burberry trench coats and maybe even an umbrella or two for good measure.

If you’ve been tuning into the most recent series of The Traitors, you might have noticed host Claudia Winkleman diving head-first into the British countrycore trend. While most of us flock to the show for its dramatic challenges, suspenseful round tables and entertaining contestants, many (aka, the C&TH team) are also sticking around to see Winkleman’s next outfit backdropped by the ornate Scottish castle or rolling countryside hills.

The presenter and radio personality’s wardrobe is anything short of dull, tapping into a host of British brands like Brora, Dr Martens, Purdey, Hunter and Holland Cooper (so far). Last season, these brands were joined by many other iconic British labels, including Barbour, Reiss, Self-Portrait and Church’s.

We’ve also gotten used to seeing Winkleman take a more playful approach to the British countrycore movement, with ornate blouses (we’re still thinking about that one pussy bow blouse from series one), jewel-toned blazers and quirky fingerless gloves. From what we’ve seen of the current series so far, it appears she’s leaning even further into this take on the trend; a quick look at her green and black ensemble in episode two, complete with chunky Dr Martens boots, smiley face-patched knitted jumper and tartan mini skirt, is all the evidence we need.

Mr Mittens

Seeded Rib Crew Neck, €465

ilovemrmittens.com

We can’t wait to see this look onscreen. Winkleman was obviously thinking about the picture with this ensemble, as she leaned towards oversized, maximalist knits. The jumper is from Belgian-Australian label Mr Mittens, and has us feeling rather envious of how warm it looks given the current cold snap.

Draped over Winkleman’s jumper was an ultra-chunky (and ultra-long) scarf from Rose & Wul, knitted in a lovely shade of moss to match the episode’s setting.

Albaray

Cream Cable Turtle Neck Jumper, £55

albaray.co.uk

Coming up in episode eight, this outfit from Winkleman shoes her keeping up her monochrome streak in style. The chunky cream knit we see her wearing in the castle is thought to be from female-founded brand Albaray (and it’s currently on sale), which she pairs with a black-and-white kilt.

The kilt in question is from (the aptly named) Le Kilt, a small-scale label that manufactures in Scotland and other parts of the UK. There’s only a limited amount of this kilt left in-stock.

Bella Freud

Velvet Saint James Jacket, £875

bellafreud.com

If there’s a round table involved, you’ll likely catch Claudia Winkleman in a blazer. In this episode, she pulled on a rich red velvet number from Bella Freud –  although the exact colour worn by Winkleman is no longer available, you can still shop a lighter shade of red or blue.

Yves Saint Laurent

Long Coat In Wool, £3,985

ysl.com

What. An. Entrance. Claudia Winkleman committed entirely to the plot with her funeral director fit, greeting the contestants outside the castle in a long black coat from YSL teamed up with a white shirt, black tie, Spanx leggings, Dr. Martens, a cane and a black net veil covering part of her face. Funeral chic, anyone?

Bella Freud

Herringbone Tweed Bianca Coat, £1,250

bellafreud.com

The challenge undertaken in episode six might have been rather dreary, but our host still managed to slay the occasion in this long grey coat from London-based fashion house Bella Freud. While this exact coat is now sold out, the brand is home to a number of similar styles that tap into Winkleman’s Traitors aesthetic.

Sticking to sugary pinks and purples, stylist Sinead McKeefry confirmed that Winkleman teamed up her blazer with a pearlescent shirt from LK Bennett.

Black ankle boot

Paris Texas

Dallas Ankle Boot, £535

paristexasbrand.com

Is it a Traitors outfit without a statement boot? Stepping away from her usual Saint Laurent kickers, Winkleman took to the round table in another pair of black boots – this time from cult footwear label Paris Texas.

Claudia Winkleman in trench coat

Burberry

Long Kensington Heritage Trench Coat, £1,890

burberry.com

Where there’s a trench coat, there’s usually a Burberry name drop – and this fit from Winkleman is no different. Her stylist opted for a calf-length trench from the brand’s heritage line, leaning into the British countrycore aesthetic.

The Row

Darko Cardigan in Wool and Cashmere, £1,990

therow.com

Now for the knits. While it was confirmed that Winkleman wore a cardigan from The Row in this scene, the exact style is sold out online – so we’ve dug out a similar cardigan from the brand in a slightly richer shade of brown.

Dubarry of Ireland

Honeysuckle Jeans In Mocha, £129

A brown pair of jeans from Dubarry helped round off Winkleman’s chocolate-toned look, which relied on earthy tones and a country appeal.

church-footwear.com

Colour blocking at its finest, Winkleman’s look was finished with a pair of brown Chelsea boots from heritage footwear label Church’s.

The Vampire’s Wife

The Whole Lotta Trouble Dress, £650

thevampireswife.com

Once again channelling some of Kate Middleton’s favourite British brands, Winkleman donned a fun black mini dress from the Vampire’s Wife for the latest episode of The Traitors. We especially love the puff sleeves and crystal embellishments dotted across the velvet fabric.

Claudia Winkleman

Johnstons of Elgin

Cashmere Float Stitch Jumper, £895

johnstonsofelgin.com

On a roll when it comes to knitwear, stylist Sinead McKeefry looked to renowned countryside fashion label Johnstons of Elgin for this look. This is (once again) a men’s jumper, and is unfortunately sold out online – but you can check out the brand’s The Traitors edit for similar styles, as well as other items (like those wrist warmers) worn by Winkleman on the show.

Green leggings

WARDROBE.NYC

Stretch-Ponte Leggings in Army Green, £228

net-a-porter.com

Sticking to earthy neutrals for this look, Winkleman was spotted teaming up her knit with a pair of leggings in a subdued shade of green alongside a pair of her trusted Hunter wellies.

Claudia Winkleman in black velvet suit

Saint Laurent

Black Velvet Blazer, £2,270

ysl.com

Winkleman rounded off the first week of episodes in a snazzy black velvet ensemble, complete with a ruffly blouse and Dr. Martens boots. We heard through the grapevine that the Traitors host sourced her blazer from Saint Laurent.

Self-Portrait

White Lace Bib Top, £260

self-portrait.com

Where there’s a suit, there’s a ruffled blouse involved – at least, if you’re Claudia Winkleman there is. She teamed up her black velvet co-ord with this one from Self-Portrait, which features an ornate lace bib and dainty black bow.

Black leggings

Commando

High-Rise Elasticated-Waistband Velvet Leggings, £89

selfridges.com

While the blazer worn by Winkleman doesn’t have a matching pair of trousers, we know that she’s prone to a good pair of leggings and found these black velvet ones from Commando. They should make a fitting match for the above blazer.

Claudia Winkleman sat on hay bales outdoors with scarecrow

Officine Générale

Amber Cashmere Felt Coat In Green, £396

theoutnet.com

What gets more British countrycore than Claudia Winkleman sat on a hay bale in a field with a cup of tea and a scarecrow by her side? The presenter pulled on her wellies (presumably Hunter), check trousers and a Fair Isle knit jumper for a day out with the contestants – topping it all off with a lovely green coat. Sinead McKeefry, who was Winkleman’s stylist throughout the show, said that her coat from episode three was from French label Officine Générale.

Fair Isle jumper

Brora

Cashmere Fair Isle Jumper, £345

broraonline.com

While we couldn’t find the exact Fair Isle jumper worn by Winkleman, her stylist did confirm on Instagram that it was from Brora. We’ve found a very similar one from the brand that should give you all the countrycore feels.

Trousers

Cordings

Wincanton Tweed Pencil Trousers, £179

cordings.co.uk

Rounding off Winkleman’s hay bale look was a pair of trousers from Cordings, a heritage fashion brand that has been working in Britain since 1839.

Claudia Winkleman in green knit jumper

KAPITAL

Intarsia Cable-Knit Wool-Blend Sweater, £480

mrporter.com

Winkleman’s green jumper in episode two actually comes from Japanese menswear label KAPITAL. A green knit with the brand’s smiley logo on the elbows, this piece is sold out nearly everywhere.

Image: BBC/Studio Lambert/LLARA PLAZA

Blue and red tartan skirt

Brora

Scottish Mohair Wool Kilt, £169

broraonline.com

Another Brora pick for Winkleman, this time in the form of a skirt. While the green tartan pleated skirt worn by the presenter with that lush KAPITAL jumper is no longer available, Brora seems to do a similar style in another colour (which teams up just as nicely with a pair of Dr Martens).

Black boot

Dr Martens

Audrick Tall Chelsea Boots, £230

drmartens.com

Winkleman teams up her chunky knit with a tartan skirt and a hefty pair of boots from Dr Martens. We couldn’t find the exact pair the host wears in the series, but she we know she opts for a taller pair of Chelsea boots rather than the classic lace-ups.

Claudia Winkleman dressed in British Countrycore style

Holland Cooper

Full Length Regency Coat (Soft Navy Blackwatch), £799

hollandcooper.com

A brand favoured amongst well-known Brits (the Princess of Wales is even an avid fan), Holland Cooper is an authority on refined tailoring and countryside staples. Winkleman wears a full-length coat from the brand in episode two of The Traitors.

Image: BBC/Studio Lambert/LLARA PLAZA

Brown sweater vest

Purdey

Women’s Argyle Vest In Bark, £148

purdey.com

While the exact Purdey Argyle sweater vest worn by Winkleman on the show has sold out online, you can snap up a similar style from the brand in a slightly different colour scheme.

Black wellington boots

Hunter

Women’s Original Tall Wellington Boots, £135

hunterboots.co.uk

When it comes to challenges, you’ll usually catch Winkleman plodding along in a pair of practical (yet still stylish) wellies. We think hers are probably from Hunter, if she’s following the same brands as last series.

Claudia Winkleman sat on armchair in study

Saint Laurent

Theo Chelsea Boots, £880

ysl.com

Stylist Sinead McKeefry revealed ahead of series two that these Saint Laurent Chelsea boots were a ‘staple’ item for Winkleman’s wardrobe this time round. ‘We had [them] in all the colour ways as well as in both suede and leather,’ she told Grazia.

Brown tweed blazer

Drake’s

Brown Houndstooth Check Harris Tweed Games Blazer Mk. VII, £895

drakes.com

The brown tweed houndstooth blazer worn by Winkleman in the first episode of series two, from The Kooples, is unfortunately sold out – but we found a very similar style from East London-based brand Drake’s.

Brora

Women’s Cashmere Wristwarmers, £59

broraonline.com

Is it really a Traitors episode if Winkleman isn’t wearing her signature wrist warmers? Stylist Sinead McKeefry said that the presenter’s were usually from Brora or Johnstons of Elgin. You’ll catch Winkleman wearing these in various colours throughout the series.
