Crockett & Jones swaps London for the granite spires of the Sierra Nevada

When it comes to spectacular American backdrops, none offer drama quite like Yosemite National Park. Nestled amongst California’s Sierra Nevada mountains, this is where outdoors enthusiasts go to witness the natural world on its grandest scale: to experience the park’s massive granite cliffs, giant sequoia trees and towering waterfalls. And for that kind of walking job, you’ll need the right shoes. Crockett & Jones hiked its way through Yosemite National Park to put its AW26 collection to the test – and revisit its long-held history in the States. The collection, now available in Crockett & Jones stores and on the brand’s website, is ripe for exploring. Here’s everything we’re loving for the new season.

Crockett & Jones Head For The Great American Outdoors

Over the years, Crockett & Jones has proved it can weather every type of terrain: the wet and windy glens of Scotland, the sun-soaked cobbles of the Amalfi Coast, the snow-capped peaks of the Alps. (Then there’s wherever James Bond happens to be on his next mission, decked out in a pair of Crockett & Jones boots.) And this season, it’s set its sights on a familiar setting: the national parks of the US.

This isn’t the first time Crockett & Jones has looked west. In fact, this great British brand has been fitting Americans with its finest shoes for nearly a century. This special relationship goes back to the years following the Second World War, when, under managing director Jonathan Jones, Crockett & Jones became the maker working behind the scenes for the likes of Ralph Lauren, Brooks Brothers and Barney’s New York. Crockett & Jones didn’t launch its own American retail presence until 2005, a shop-in-shop that’s since grown into two standalone flagships in New York City.

And now, having nailed footwear fit for both British and American cities, the brand now looks to more rugged terrain. Combining American-inspired design and refined English craftsmanship, Crockett & Jones’ AW26 collection delves into its stateside heritage while highlighting the British details that have made the brand such a success on both sides of the pond.

But it’s not all style over substance. While the brand is known for its stylish loafers and boots, it has paid just as much attention to comfort, flexibility and water resistance in recent years. And this season, it’s putting three years of performance research and development into practice with the arrival if its new winter boot.

The perfect testing ground? Yosemite National Park. The setting isn’t there just to prove a point about durability – though the Vibram cleated soles and UK-made Commando rubber underfoot certainly ensure Crockett & Jones shoes can stand their ground thousands of miles beyond the British countryside – but also offer a nod to the collection’s key inspirations. Towering granite and ancient forest echo a collection built around heritage Scotch Grain leather, rugged rough-out suede and a distinctly American, workwear-inflected silhouette. In other words: expect all-weather, all-Atlantic footwear staples for autumn/winter.

Vail

Named for the ski town, Vail is this season’s defining statement piece: a work-boot-inspired apron Derby in reverse butts suede. Crockett & Jones spent three years developing the design to get a genuinely lightweight, water-resistant winter boot right. A padded collar, finished in smooth grain leather to match the suede, and two speed hooks keep it fuss-free to wear.

Hickstead 4

This is Crockett & Jones’ brand new Jodhpur boot, which boasts a design rooted in English equestrian heritage, but reads distinctly American Western. This iteration pares the brand’s historic Jodhpur pattern back to something cleaner and more minimal, in Dark Brown Scotch Grain or Dark Brown Rough-Out Suede, both set on a Vibram cleated rubber sole.

Aspen

A reworking of the brand’s archival Wicklow boot, Aspen borrows its galosh side ‘V’ pattern from the equally storied Snowdon, resulting in a rugged, split-toe Derby boot with a distinctive butted seam apron and a classic leather back-strap. Choose from Dark Brown Hatch Grain or Dark Brown Waterproof Sides, both on a British-made Commando rubber sole.

Boston 2

Proof that a loafer can hold its own through winter. The brand’s best-loved Penny Loafer gets a cold-weather update in Rough-Out or Water-Resistant Oak Suede, set on a lightweight Vibram sole with a reverse storm welt. A loafer leaves no room for adjustment, which makes a precise heel fit the real test of a shoemaker’s skill – one Crockett & Jones has had 145 years to master.
