Peloton 2.0 is here

High-energy, community-driven spinning you can do from home has always been the bread and butter of Peloton, the New York-founded company which soared to fame for its smart bikes. But this October, the global fitness brand is ushering in a new era with an overhaul of its products, allowing you to switch seamlessly between cardio, strength training and holistic workouts – all with just one piece of equipment.
Peloton has relaunched its product portfolio as the Cross Training Series, featuring three new devices in the UK: the Cross Training Bike, Bike+ and Tread. A key new addition is the swivelling screen which rotates 180 degrees in both directions, making it easier to take part in weight training, barre, pilates, breathwork and more off-bike. Personalisation will also be a primary focus through the new AI-powered Peloton IQ technology, alongside an expanded wellbeing offering which aims to incorporate everything from sleep to nutrition.
Peloton Unveils New Chapter
Often billed as the Apple of fitness, Peloton was founded in 2012 by a group of ex-IAC employees. Initially gaining fame for its stationery bike, the company was a pioneer in the world of at-home workout equipment, bringing the buzz and community element of spin classes to living rooms for the first time. It officially launched in the UK in September 2018, but it was in 2020 when Peloton really exploded: as Covid hit, everyone scrambled to get their hands on bikes to keep up their fitness regime in the absence of gyms and studios. As we emerged from lockdown, the boom inevitably dwindled, but its latest chapter, announced today, feels like an exciting step into new territory.
Personalised Plans & Workouts
In line with trends across the board, strength training is a big part of Peloton 2.0. ‘You probably know us well for our cardio, it’s what we really made our name on in the industry, and that’s a fundamental component of wellness,’ says Peloton instructor Ben Alldis. And while he stresses that ‘cardio is still going to be a primary focus’, the strength training offering – which is already Peloton’s second most popular modality – is being enhanced and improved.
Personalised workouts and plans will also be integrated into the offering. The most advanced features are seen on the Bike+, which has a built-in tracking camera, allowing real-time feedback on form. That means if you’re doing your squats, lunges or presses incorrectly, a message will pop up on the screen offering pointers. Smashing out 20 reps in the timeslot when you’ve only been programmed to do 10? The bike will recommend upping your weight to ensure you’re being properly challenged.
The plus line also allows users to take the workout at their own pace rather than following along with the instructor, or even create a bespoke set of exercises based on your personal goals.
Another new feature is the ability to connect your Garmin, Fitbit or Apple Watch, meaning Peloton can use the data from your other workouts and general health stats to offer tailored recommendations. For instance, if you’ve already done a run that morning, Peloton might suggest you opt for a mobility session in the evening. Users can also benefit from unique weekly plans, as well as performance insights.
‘Our advantage is pairing intelligent software with premium hardware,’ says Peloton’s chief product officer Nick Caldwell. ‘While others can offer generic AI workouts or insights derived from incomplete data sources, Peloton IQ and our new Cross Training Series together deliver a more advanced take on AI personal coaching.’
Equipment Upgrades
Across all of its equipment, Peloton has brought in improvements such as faster WiFi, improved audio and a comfier, redesigned saddle. The Bike+ enhances things even further with the addition of Sonos speakers, an integrated fan, a phone tray and hands-free control, meaning you can command Peloton like you would Alexa using the words ‘OK Peloton’.
Expanded Wellness Offering
Peloton is growing its offering to include a more rounded wellbeing offering. Members can now access breathing exercises from app Breathwrk, and the platform will delve deeper into nutrition (with a focus on pre- and post-workout fuel) and recovery.
There will be an increase in specialised classes too, including injury rehab and prevention, workouts designed to help you train for Hyrox, and sessions surrounding menopause care.
How Much Will It Cost?
The Peloton Cross Training Bike costs £1,599, Cross Training Bike+ costs £2,299, Cross Training Tread costs £3,499. Alongside this, membership is £45 a month. onepeloton.com
