Perhaps all that glitters isn't gold

Nothing screams luxury like a weighty gold watch, perhaps encrusted with rare gems or finished with a colourful dial. But there’s a more minimalistic option to consider: stainless steel. Here’s everything you need to know about the latest wristwear trend.

A Wristwear Revolution? The Rising Popularity Of Stainless Steel Watches

While still utterly stylish, stainless steel watches are sophisticated, scratch-resistant, and (potentially) less expensive. They’ve recently been promoted by a variety of celebrities including Jennifer Lawrence, who sported a Longines La Grande Classique steel watch at the Cannes Film Festival this year. Meanwhile, at Watch and Wonders 2023, Julia Roberts showed off Chopard’s Happy Sports watch, which is now made with 80% recycled steel.

Perhaps it’s the call of quiet luxury, or just a shift towards something different, but steel watches offer a subtle hint of glamour without needing to shout about it. From Cartier to Louis Vuitton, plenty of brands have been working on stainless steel versions of their classic designs – think BVLGARI’s signature Serpenti watch, for instance. Or perhaps a stylish update of a sporting classic, like Doxa’s latest iteration of its 1967 dive watch in stainless steel.
