Here’s everything we know so far

This year marks 250 years since the birth of one of Britain’s most famous authors: Jane Austen. With six romantic novels to her name (as well as the epistolary novel Lady Susan, the unfinished Sanditon and a plethora of shorter works), the regency writer is most known for Pride and Prejudice (1813). In fact, its opening line is perhaps the best known opening line to a novel written in English the world over: ‘It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.’
Her second novel to be published, Pride and Prejudice is also Austen’s most adapted work, from an Italian miniseries to stage productions to 2005’s iconic feature film starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen. And now it’s Netflix’s turn: the streaming giant has revealed it is working on a new six part adaptation of the timeless story. Here’s everything we know so far.
Netflix’s Pride and Prejudice: Plot, Cast, Release Date & More
Best-selling author Dolly Alderton has teamed up with Heartstopper director Euros Lyn to bring Pride and Prejudice to the screen again, with Netflix set to release the six-part miniseries.
‘Once in a generation, a group of people get to retell this wonderful story and I feel very lucky that I get to be a part of it,’ Dolly tells Netflix. ‘Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is the blueprint for romantic comedy – it has been a joy to delve back into its pages to find both familiar and fresh ways of bringing this beloved book to life.
‘The book is a gift to adapt – packed with drama and depth as well as comedy and charm,’ the Everything I Know About Love writer adds. ‘In it lies the opportunity to examine the complexities of love, family, friendship and society, while aspiring to Austen’s delightfully observational voice. With Euros Lyn directing our stellar cast, I am so excited to reintroduce these hilarious and complicated characters to those who count Pride and Prejudice as their favorite book, and those who are yet to meet their Lizzie and Mr Darcy.’
Alderton’s Pride and Prejudice is the first loyal English-language screen adaptation of Austen’s immortal novel since 2005 – but it’s far from the only Austen drama in the works. Hot off its more biographical period drama Miss Austen, the BBC is working on a Pride and Prejudice spin off titled The Other Bennet Sister, based on the 2020 novel of the same name by Janice Hadlow.
Elsewhere audiobook giant Audible is working on a cinematic Pride and Prejudice audio adaptation starring Marisa Abela and Harris Dickinson in the leading roles, while Focus Features and Working Title (the duo behind that landmark 2005 Pride and Prejudice adaptation) are teaming up on a new Sense and Sensibility adaptation starring Brits Daisy Edgar-Jones and George MacKay in the leading roles.

What Will Happen?
We’re told Netflix’s adaptation of Pride and Prejudice will be ‘period-faithful’ and ‘hew closely to the original text’ – so fans of Austen’s way with words will be pleased.
The story is perhaps one of the earliest examples of the TikTok-favourite ‘enemies to lovers’ trope, with our protagonist Elizabeth Bennet ultimately falling for the initially arrogant Fitzwilliam Darcy. Their reluctant affection spawned iconic lines including: ‘In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.’
‘We are delighted to be sharing this beloved British classic with our global audience,’ Netflix exec Mona Qureshi says. ‘Pride and Prejudice is the ultimate romantic comedy. Dolly’s fierce intelligence and enormous heart, twinned with her genuine love of the Austen novel, means she is able to bring new insights, whilst celebrating all that the generations of fans hold so dear.’
Who Will Star?
Netflix revealed the core cast of its Pride and Prejudice remake back in April – and now in July, new stars are on the bill.
Golden Globe winner Emma Corrin will star in the lead role as Lizzie Bennet, joined by BAFTA winner Jack Lowden as Mr. Darcy. Best known for her turn as a young Princess Diana in Netflix’s The Crown, Corrin has since starred in Lady Chatterley’s Lover, Nosferatu and, most recently, Black Mirror, while Jack Lowden is best known for starring in Apple TV’s Slow Horses.
‘Playing Elizabeth Bennet is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,’ Corrin says. ‘To be able to bring this iconic character to life, alongside Olivia and Jack, with Dolly’s phenomenal scripts, is truly the greatest honor. I can’t wait for a new generation to fall in love with this story all over again.’
They’ll be joined by Hollywood heavyweight Olivia Colman, who is taking on the role of Mrs Bennet, Lizzie’s mother. Stepping into Donald Sutherland’s shoes as Mr Bennet meanwhile is Rufus Sewell. Best known for his turn in The Holiday (2006), Sewell has most recently starred in The Diplomat, The Man in the High Castle and Scoop (2024). No stranger to period dramas, you’ll also recognise Sewell from the BBC’s Middlemarch miniseries and ITV’s Victoria with Jenna Coleman.
Rounding out the Bennet family as Lizzie’s sisters are the newly announced Freya Mavor as Jane and Rhea Norwood as Lydia, alongside newcomers Holly Avery as Kitty and Hopey Parish as Mary, both in their screen debuts. Meanwhile Daryl McCormack will take on the role of Jane’s beloved and Darcy’s good friend Mr Bingley, while Siena Kelly takes the role of his sister Caroline.
Elsewhere Louis Partridge will be scheming Mr Wickham, British comedian Jamie Demetriou will be the awkward Mr Collins, and Fiona Shaw has joined the cast as his fearsome benefactor Lady Catherine de Bourg. Supporting stars include Anjana Vasan, Sebastian Armesto and more.
