Find wit, heritage and whimsy at Dior’s Selfridges pop-up
Jonathan Anderson is coming into his own at Dior – and his next move brings him a step closer to home with the opening of his first pop-up at Selfridges.
Inside The Dior Pop-Up At Selfridges
At their best, big brand collaborations with big name department stores offer customers different perspectives on their favourite brands. Seeing a collection you thought you knew through the eyes of a really talented buyer and merchandiser can reveal intriguing new angles.
Take the new pop-up from Dior at Selfridges, one of France’s most iconic fashion houses in one of the UK’s most iconic retail spaces, to celebrate the first Dior collections by the UK’s own Jonathan Anderson (he’s from Northern Ireland). Get ready for a meet-cute between French savoir-faire and British iconoclastic street style.
The savoir-faire? That’s evident not only in the decor, which echoes the soothing grey tones and charming bellboys of Dior’s first ever boutique in Paris at 30 Avenue Montaigne, but the cut, finish and trim of every item on those tempting shelves.
The fun, and education, comes from this being the first time Dior is selling its men’s and women’s collections in the same space. That feels especially relevant given that Anderson, who heads up both at Dior, is injecting gender fluidity to a house primarily known for ultra feminine tropes.
If you love Anderson’s new spin on the Bar Jacket (think slightly shrunken proportions and a new centre of gravity) but suspect you may prefer the men’s take, or vice versa, know that from now on, it’s much easier for you to try on both.
Then there are Anderson’s show-stealing reinterpretations of classic Dior accessories, including the Lady Dior. Instantly recognisable, historically loaded, and continually relevant, it arrived on the scene relatively late in the brand’s evolution. Launched in 1994 by designer Gianfranco Ferré, 47 years after the house was born, it has become one of its most instantly recognisable designs.
That simple chunky rectangular silhouette makes it endlessly adaptable, as demonstrated by the Lady Dior Art Project, an annual creative initiative inviting contemporary artists to reinterpret the bag. Debuted at Art Basel Miami in 2016, this series has included Marc Quinn, Jessica Cannon, Sophia Loeb and more.
There’s more to come. Anderson proved his genius for accessories at Loewe with the Puzzle and numerous takes on their classics. At Dior, he’s already smothered the Lady Dior with lucky four-leaf clovers (the Irish connection, they’re also on T-shirts), adorned a nano-size with buttercups (a tribute to all the cows who’ve given us rich Irish butter?) and added a whimsy of new bag charms. I’m also officially excited to see and feel the first Bow Bags – a new Dior bag that’s entirely Anderson’s own, albeit with an unapologetic nod to one of Christian Dior’s favourite embellishments, the bow – as they touch down in Selfridges.
I’ll be checking out his reimagined Tote Bags too. Designed by his predecessor Maria Grazia Chiuri, these were so successful they became ubiquitous. I’m curious to see whether his smart-witty decision to redesign the Book Tote canvases with actual book covers such as Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ Les Liaisons Dangereuses and Flaubert’s Madame Bovary can reignite that initial obsession.
Finally, those totemic monogrammed CD shoes from way back, which Anderson has reintroduced. Designed by Roger Vivier when he worked for Dior in the early 50s through to 1963, this is where Anderson lets loose his reverence for the Dior archive. ‘Vivier was one of the geniuses of footwear,’ he says. Fashion is 50 percent timing and the Initial Pump, with its relevantly high-on-the foot 1950s cut, now looks intriguingly fresh.
And who will resist the mid-heeled Dior mules with their teeny but attitude – steeped bows? ‘Sex with restraint,’ suggests Anderson. He’s not wrong.
