Spring cleaning is about to get a lot more lucrative
What’s your biggest barrier to selling your old clothes? The lengthy upload process, the effort of posting, the cut of fees the website takes from your profit, or all of the above? Well, this is all about to get a whole lot easier with eBay’s new scheme: from today, both buying and selling pre-loved fashion is free of fees on eBay UK.
No Fees For Selling Your Pre-Loved Clothing On eBay
In 2023, eBay prevented over 1.6 million kg of waste going to landfill through the sale of pre-loved fashion (that’s the weight of over 4 million shirts, FYI) – and its eyes are set on even bigger results in 2024. From today, pre-loved fashion sold via the platform will be totally fee-free, for both buyers and sellers, a move designed to encourage fashion lovers to put more cash in their pockets while supporting circular fashion.
Everything from brand new with tags to worn items will qualify for the scheme, and existing listings will also benefit from free selling, even if they were listed before today (8 April 2024).
The move responds to new research revealing that 70 percent of the nation wears 50 per cent or less of their wardrobe on a day-to-day basis. Even worse, 92 percent of Brits say they own more than one item of clothing they haven’t worn in the last 12 months. Despite this, only 25 percent of Brits sell their pre-loved or unwanted clothes, and eBay reports that, on average, Brits could earn £400 from selling their wares.
‘Free fashion selling has come at the right time for a nation sitting on billions of pounds worth of unwanted clothes,’ says Kirsty Keoghan, General Manager of Global Fashion for eBay. ‘We know selling clothes can sometimes feel like a chore, so free selling and new updates like new AI-powered listings, will help more of us to sell clothes easily – putting more cash in pockets. By encouraging more people to buy and sell pre-loved clothing, we’ll keep more clothes out of landfill as we collectively enable a circular economy for fashion.’
New Features To Make Uploading Easier
Today, eBay is also unveiling new features to make buying and selling pre-loved fashion even easier. This includes:
- AI generated item descriptions to cut down listing time
- A new personalised shopping experience through customised feeds and fashion visual searched
- A new livestream shopping experience called ‘eBay Live’ which will invite users to attend live auctions and shop exclusive deals in realtime.
