This marks the first resale alternative from the high street giant
Beloved British retailer Marks & Spencer has launched its first dedicated resale platform, teaming up with eBay and circular fashion partner Reskinned to make it easier for shoppers to trade in and buy pre-loved M&S clothing, footwear and accessories.
M&S Launches Its First Resale Offering On eBay
With over half of UK adults having shopped pre-loved in the past year, it’s safe to say that secondhand shopping – especially when it comes to fashion – is surging in popularity. On eBay, refurbished and pre-loved make up 40 percent of sales, and global users searched “vintage” over a thousand times per minute on average in June 2024. And, in the UK, M&S is one of eBay’s most sought-after brands. Searches have gone up 525 percent in the past year, putting it among the top three most-searched women’s fashion labels on the platform – and making it the perfect time for the M&S to make its official debut on the platform.
The new partnership with M&S pairs eBay’s reach with Reskinned’s expertise in clothing repair, resale and recycling, whose ‘mission is to maximise the lifespan of clothing,’ says co-founder Matt Hanrahan. He continues, ‘We’re making it easy for brands and their customers to rehome unwanted clothes, whether that’s reselling, repairing or if it’s end-of-life recycling it responsibly. We’re determined to create a more sustainable clothing future for us all.’
With that in mind, M&S customers can now send in unwanted items using a free courier, accessed via the M&S website or QR codes in stores. For each trade-in with at least one M&S-labelled piece, shoppers will receive a £5 voucher toward purchases over £35 on fashion, home and beauty. Items that can be resold are cleaned, repaired and listed by Reskinned on eBay, while those beyond re-wear are responsibly repurposed or recycled.
‘At M&S, we are committed to supporting customers to do the right thing and playing our part in reducing textile waste,’ said Monique Leewenburgh, Director of Sourcing and Technology in Fashion, Home & Beauty at M&S. ‘We’re delighted to be partnering with the pre-loved experts at eBay and Reskinned to launch a dedicated resale platform. This not only offers more ways for customers to give items Another Life, but also an opportunity for customers to purchase items they might have missed from previous seasons – which are pre-loved.’
As mentioned, the launch plays into Another Life, M&S’s circular fashion initiative built around four principles: rewear, repair, recycle and resale. Having pioneered in-store clothes recycling back in 2008, M&S says this step completes the final ‘R.’
For eBay, the tie-up is part of its long-standing push to make resale mainstream. As Kirsty Keoghan, GM of European Fashion at eBay, shares, ‘For nearly three decades, eBay has partnered with fashion brands to help them sell seamlessly at every stage of the inventory lifecycle, while championing the principles of recommerce and the circular economy.’
M&S is a British institution, loved for its enduring quality and features in many UK wardrobes – and this latest project only reinforces M&S’s ‘mission to make circular fashion more accessible, appealing, and scalable,’ as Kirsty puts it.
The scheme also supports M&S’s long-time charity partner, with 15 percent of profits from every sale set to go to Oxfam. Items traded in through the existing in-store recycling scheme will now either be sold in Oxfam shops or resold online via eBay, with the remainder recycled.
Circular Economy Minister Mary Creagh welcomed project. ‘Our Plan for Change is focused on cleaning up Britain, ending our throwaway culture and ensuring that the 700,000 odd tonnes of clothes we throw away each year are worn more,’ she explained. ‘Only government and businesses working together can stop fashion costing the earth, which is why I welcome this new initiative from M&S – a great way for consumers to be rewarded for providing a new home for old favourites.’
