News just in: Margot Robbie has bought up a new mega-mansion in her home-state of Queensland, Australia. Worth a reported AUD$28 million, this off-market deal is one of the most expensive residential transactions ever recorded in Queensland. Named Redwood, the seven-acre estate is set within the Currumbin Valley, near the Gold Coast. A real return to her roots, Robbie was raised in the valley, spending most of her childhood on her grandparent’s Currumbin Valley farm. Her new sprawling residence features six bedrooms, six bathrooms and garaging for 10 vehicles, along with horse stables, a swimming pool and a full-size tennis court.

Early Years

Born in the small Australian town of Dalby, Queensland, Robbie’s family relocated to the populous Gold Coast suburb of Southport when she was 16. Recalling the time spent on her grandparents’ farm in a Vogue Australia interview, she asked her mum, ‘Do you remember when we lived in Currumbin Valley, I would always do my homework in a tree? […] You tell stories like that and you realise how lucky you are to have grown up on the Gold Coast.’

At aged 17, Robbie secured her big break with a recurring role as Donna Freedman in Aussie soap drama Neighbours. Moving to Melbourne to be closer to the studios, she shared a flat with Neighbours co-star Ashleigh Brewer from 2008–2011.

Brooklyn, New York

Having saved up her wages from Neighbours, Robbie used the cash to make her move to Brooklyn – where she scored her first stateside role as a flight attendant in the US period drama Pan Am (2011–12). Though the show was canned after just one season, it was enough to catch the attention of Hollywood and land Robbie her breakthrough role in The Wolf of Wall Street (2013). During this period, she rented an apartment in Brooklyn and joined an amateur ice hockey team.

Clapham, London

At this point in her career, you might expect the movie star to set up shop in one of the more glamorous boroughs of London, like Kensington & Chelsea or Hampstead. But it seems that these celeb-studded hotspots held little attraction for the Aussie girl. Like any good expat from Down Under, in 2013 Robbie laid down her roots in Clapham, moving into a house with eight friends from wartime drama Suite Français (2015) including her husband-to-be, the film’s third assistant director Tom Ackerley, as well as co-founders of Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment, Sophia Kerr and Josy McNamara. The gang nicknamed the home ‘The Manor’ and naturally, living in Clapham, they went on to spend many sweaty nights in Robbie’s favourite nightclub, Infernos.

Clapham, London (Again)

In 2016, Tom and Margot moved into a flat with ‘just’ four others. ‘We’ve downsized,’ Margot told news.com.au: ‘I like living with lots of people. It reminds me of the house I grew up in.’ She also admitted that she doesn’t like splashing the cash. ‘I’ve never spent money on staying anywhere beautiful and I’ve never paid a lot in rent,’ she said. ‘I don’t spend much money at all. It actually makes me really anxious, the idea of it. It seems crazy to spend a huge amount of money on things you don’t need. I’m pretty frugal.’

Hancock Park, Los Angeles

Speaking of being frugal, having married Tom in December 2016, the pair then bought up their first LA home the following January for $2.73m. Located in the wealthy enclave of Hancock Park, the property was built in 2016. Spanning 3,300 sqft, the five-bedroom, five-bathroom home boasts an indoor swing, marble fireplaces, statement chandeliers, outdoor stove and TV, a pet room, swimming pool and spa, and a bar.

Margot and Tom called the pad home for four years until they put it back on the market in May 2021, listing it for $3.47m (£2.8m). It sold one month later, for $3.45m.

Gold Coast, Queensland

Having paid off the mortgage of her mother’s Southport home as part of her 60th birthday present in 2014, the Barbie star then splashed AUD$2.5 million (£1.3m) on two neighbouring Gold Coast homes for her mother and sister in 2018.

Hollywood Heights, Los Angeles

With I, Tonya (2017) and Mary Queen of Scots (2018) now under her belt, in 2018 the LuckyChap producer bought a Hollywood Heights bungalow from Dustin Lance Black – screenwriter and husband of Olympic gold medallist Tom Daley. Built in 1951, the highest level of the tiered terrace boasts views across the canyon beyond. Having purchased the property for $950,000 (£766k), Robbie carried out extensive renovations on the two-bedroom before renting it out for $4,200 a month. After almost three years, Margot sold the home for $1.2 million (£967k) in 2021.

Venice Beach, Los Angeles

Robbie reportedly snapped up a Venice Beach compound for $5m in an off-market deal in 2019. When Robbie bought the home, it comprised three separate structures: a work space, two-bed bungalow and a cottage, plus an outside space with a lawn and a lap pool. Though the property can be spotted in Robbie’s 2019 ’73 Questions’ with Vogue, it has since undergone major renovations, which started in 2021. As far as we know, this is still the actor’s main residence.

Byron Bay, Queensland

After a decade away from home, the actor and producer finally returned to her homeland in 2018, purchasing a Brisbane property for a reported $4.6m. Described as ‘Australia’s most beautiful home’, Cedar Hill is located in the Newrybar area – also home to actor-brothers Chris and Liam Hemsworth.

Set within five acres of gardens, Robbie’s eight-bedroom, eight-bathroom estate comprises two residences: a sleeping barn and a living barn. Away from the main structures, there’s an additional two-bed cabin with a kitchen, living area and deck, as well as an all-weather terrace, mineral pool, spa and firepit.

Aberdeenshire, Scotland

In 2024, Robbie bought a cottage on the banks of the River Dee in Scotland, not far from the King’s private estate at Balmoral. Located near the village of Braemar in Aberdeenshire, it has become a popular haunt for A-listers in recent years thanks to the luxury Fife Arms hotel owned by Swiss art dealers, Iwan and Manuela Wirth. Though she doesn’t have a close relationship to her father, it’s through the Scots-born sugar cane tycoon Doug Robbie that the star gets her Scottish roots.
