The Country & Town House Responsible Buyers’ Guide

What Is Kate Middleton’s Personal Style?

The Princess of Wales is known for her clever style choices, which often combine classic design and the moment’s biggest trends – while still carrying an air of sophistication befitting a royal. Kate’s wardrobe does employ a global roster of brands and designers, but you’ll often find the princess showcasing homegrown talent from the UK (a preference which comes in handy on some of England’s rainier days, when a coat and wellies are needed).

Kate Middleton’s events wardrobe is perhaps her most famous, and is made up of everything from state dinner-appropriate gowns, tiaras and archival jewellery to smartly tailored suits, race day hats and heels. Her ‘off-duty’ or casual wardrobe, on the other hand, typically consists of crisp, light-coloured shirts and jeans, knitted jumpers, casual dresses, trainers and boots. But regardless of the occasion, you can expect the Princess of Wales to look smartly dressed and elegant.

Catherine Walker

London-based design atelier Catherine Walker & Co has been the home of beautiful women’s tailoring and dressmaking since the 1970s. The Princess of Wales is often spotted in the designer’s coatdresses when the weather sits on the chillier side, opting for styles in a rainbow shades (just like the late Queen Elizabeth II). She’s not the only royal to wear Catherine Walker, either; the designer has also kitted out Princess Diana and Lady Helen Taylor.

Dubarry of Ireland

While many of Kate Middleton’s royal engagements take place inside palaces and halls, when she does brave the outdoors she makes sure to wrap up in tweeds, wools and tartans. Cue Dubarry of Ireland, who is responsible for kitting out the Princess of Wales in a variety of coats and jackets over the years.

Holland Cooper

Specialising in classic British design, Holland Cooper is another home-grown brand favoured by the royal. You can often catch the Princess of Wales in the brand’s sharply cut suits (we’re a massive fan of this pinstripe suit that Kate wears), winter coats and the occasional Fair Isle jumper.

Manolo Blahnik

You’ll rarely see the Princess of Wales at a royal event without a trusty pair of Manolo Blahnik heels on her feet. Kate has been a long-time fan of the London-based fashion label, and even wore its famous Hangisi pumps in her first official portrait with Prince William in 2022.

And while the Princess of Wales is reported to own numerous pieces from the brand, it’s the now-famous bubblegum pink dress which is the most recognisable. Worn during an outing to Chelsea Flower Show in 2023, the dress perfectly demonstrated the royal’s preference for sophisticated, feminine styles.

Phillipa Lepley

It’s not everyday a royal banquet takes place in the UK – but when it does, you’d best believe the Princess of Wales will dress to impress. While the royal has only worn London-based designer Phillipa Lepley for public events a handful of times, it’s always with high levels of glamour and drama. Think golden gowns, embroidered capes and swathes of satin.

Ralph Lauren

If we were to describe Kate Middleton’s royal uniform, it would be this: a sharp blazer (sleeves rolled up), a shirt, skinny jeans and either a pair of flats or boots. It’s a solid combination – one made all the better by one of her go-to brands, Ralph Lauren. The Princess of Wales owns several jackets, blazers and shirts from the label, as well as a few knitted pieces and sunglasses.

Founded by former model (and muse to Vivienne Westwood, Bella Freud and Philip Treacy), Susie Cave, The Vampire’s Wife is synonymous with slinky silhouettes, rich colours and gorgeous textures. The label sadly closed its doors for good in 2024, but you can still track it down on rental and resale platforms globally.

Victoria Beckham

One local label Kate Middleton’s been seen in more recently is Victoria Beckham. The former Spice Girl and her husband are said to be long-time friends of the Prince and Princess of Wales, having attended several royal events over the years – making the designer a frequent choice for the princess. The most recognisable Victoria Beckham piece from the royal wardrobe is an olive suit, which Middleton has worn multiple times since its first outing in 2025.
