Whether you’re seeking riverside dining or a cute café spot, these are the finest places to dine in TW9 and 10

Richmond – with its leafy streets and idyllic turn of the Thames – is a true foodie destination. From adorable plant-based cafés to souped up restaurants with panoramic rooftop terraces, there’s something for whatever dining occasion you face. Here’s our picks of the best.

Your Guide To Dining In Richmond

The Riverhouse Restaurant

Set in the Bingham Riverhouse, a stylish boutique hotel, this dining room has a plum view of the Thames. The kitchen is led by head chef Vanessa Marx, and she presents a menu that pulls in seasonal and foraged ingredients with an admirable environmental gusto. With that in mind, expect locally grown produce at the fore – take the mushroom and fermented cashew paté, where the mushroom is produced at a local rooftop farm in Wimbledon – and guilt-free desserts which use natural sugar alternatives. She’s a big believer in food having a role in healing, too, so take this as a total wellness trip. Oh, and FYI, the afternoon tea has a fantastic vegan, gluten-free version. Imogen Taylor

Frankly, locals might resent our recommending this beloved café in Terrace Gardens – it’s a proper hidden gem with little social media presence. But owner Harriet Thomas deserves applaud for her duo of casual eateries (sister venue Tide Tables is located in a boat arch at Richmond bridge) which, over the years, have hosted community events and theatre performances. And with a heartening conscience – it sources 100 percent fair-trade ingredients and, to boot, it is meat-free –  it’s the perfect spot for a cup of tea and a vegetarian sausage roll should you be pausing in the idyllic green surrounds. Mignonette

This bistro boasts a Bib for its – for Richmond – affordable French food. Think small plates like its duck foie gras and tuna carpaccio or vegan melitzanosalata (aubergine dip) for just over a tenner – but if you do fancy a splurge, you should tuck into Mignonette’s 100-day dry-aged steak or butter poached native lobster. Conveniently located near to Richmond station (and with on-street parking), this bistro happily fulfils the need for an eatery in this area of Kew Road. IT

Riverside proximity, and a reconnection with nature? There’s a lot to love about Tower House and, in particular, its riverside garden where you can drink in the ultimate sunset views. Its head chef, Theo Hill, also helms the kitchen at Gold in celeb-haunt Notting Hill, but where Gold focuses on pan-European food, Tower House is a bit more coastal Med. Its sharing concept menu centres wood roasted meats and veg like its nduja half-chicken as well as fresh fish carpaccios. And though the wine list does dip into the new world, it’s extensive and includes its pick of natural and orange wines. IT

Scott’s Richmond

Mayfair stalwart Scott’s, known for its oysters and fruits de mer platters, opened up its sister site in Richmond in 2022 in an unusual spot – taking over the old Revolution bar. Glam, old world interiors dominate its ground floor dining room, which centres around a luxurious central bar, while upstairs a verdant dining terrace boasts views of the river’s punters. The partygoers of old will be taking a different kind of bump there, these days – a caviar bump. And on that matter: while the restaurant made headlines upon its open as the menu featured £900 caviar, today, 20g of Imperial will set you back a much more sensible £65. Split a day fish and swish some Sancerre while live piano soundtracks your dinner. TD

Peggy Jean at Riverside Green

When dining riverside isn’t quite enough, there’s the Peggy Jean. An Oxford college barge turned floating restaurant, it features an Australian-inspired menu and proper pizza oven on its sun trap deck. Plump for the seared yellowfin tuna, or, if you’re joining around brunch-time, the Bondi – a riff from down under on a Full English. And though decriers are saying the bottomless brunch is over, at the Peggy Jean it’s alive and kicking; add an unlimited tap of mimosas with it. IT

Petersham Nurseries

Set in a botanical greenhouse – and on the wider site of the iconic garden shop – Petersham Nurseries was awarded a Michelin Green Star in 2021. And deservedly: valuing simplicity, the restaurant aims to emphasise the natural flavours of their ingredients by indulging in fresh herbs and vegetables which are paired with premium cuts of meat and delicious seafood – think, as on the current sample set menu, British nettle risotto. Just off the beaten track and close to Richmond Park, the likes of Mick Jagger and Sir David Attenborough having been sighted here. Do book – you’ll struggle for a walk-in with that star-endorsement. Napoli On The Road

Its Chiswick branch has remarkably, for three consecutive years, been awarded the title of Europe’s best pizzeria, beating out peers in Italy. Its Richmond outpost is just as good. Head chef Michele Pascarella – with his reassuringly Italian name – sources toppings directly from local farmers markets which are then paired together with the restaurant’s ultra-light dough. Its signature pizza,  the Ricordi d’Infanzia (‘Childhood Memories’), includes a Parmigiano Reggiano fondue sauce topped with slow-cooked beef ragù. Buon appetito, indeed. IT

How We Curated This List: The C&TH Food & Drink Promise

From Michelin-starred dining rooms to hidden neighbourhood gems, the C&TH team is dedicated to guiding you to the best culinary experiences. Our editorial independence is paramount. While our editors and writers occasionally accept press invitations to review a menu, nobody pays to be featured in our guides – nor will we include anything that doesn’t meet our editorial standards. On those occasions, we will typically give feedback to the restaurant on exactly why we couldn’t include them. Whether a restaurant has been rigorously tested by our team on the ground, or included for its undeniable industry reputation and exceptional chef credentials, we only ever recommend places that will be worth your time and money.
