Is There A Dress Code For Glyndebourne?

Yes, the dress code while attending evening performances at Glyndebourne is usually formal (the dress code daytime events such as rehearsals, open days and picnics, however, is much more relaxed). In the case of the opera, it’s expected that guests will attend in black tie attire with an emphasis on eveningwear and elegance.

When it comes to women’s dress, Glyndebourne-goers can choose between floor-length evening gowns, cocktail dresses, formal trouser suits and smart separates like a silk blouse and skirt. You can finish off the look with either heels or dress shoes, as well as accessories – think statement jewellery, a clutch, scarf or shawl.

For menswear, the dress code allows visitors to wear a formal suit and tie or dinner jacket, or a dress shirt and trousers with a sports coat. It’s encouraged that these are worn with dress shoes, like Oxford or loafers, and accessories like pocket squares, cufflinks and tie clips.

Since much of the Glyndebourne opera experience is held outdoors, it’s also worth considering taking a wrap or light jacket to avoid getting too cold on chillier evenings (this is the UK, after all).
