It’s Official: Wonkacore Is Now A Thing

Is this the trend that should stay in a world of pure imagination?

Film and TV is a treasure trove when it comes to unearthing buzzy fashion trends – and in the last year alone, we’ve seen everything from Barbiecore and mermaidcore to gothcore and quiet luxury. But a new ‘core’ is set to takeover this December: Wonkacore. Following in the footsteps of its predecessors, Wonkacore takes inspiration from upcoming film Wonka. Get to grips with the trend below.

The Country & Town House Responsible Buyers’ Guide

What Is Wonkacore?

As its name suggests, Wonkacore is a style aesthetic stemming from fictional character Willy Wonka – more specifically, the rendition of the character played by Timothée Chalamet in 2023’s Wonka. The film, which comes out in December, is one of this year’s most hotly anticipated (coming right behind Barbie and Oppenheimer), with a star-studded cast making many fans hopeful that the adaptation will live up to its predecessors.

And Chalamet certainly looks the part, from what we’ve seen in teasers and trailers. Staying true to the eccentric character, Warner Bros decked out the actor in a fanciful wardrobe complete with a purple coat, brown waistcoat and matching (if slightly crumpled) top hat.

So where does Wonkacore come in? Dubbed ‘chocolatecore’ by some fans, the trend draws on two key elements: sweet confectionaries and Willy Wonka’s iconic wardrobe. Think rich chocolatey tones, with splashes of caramel, gold and auburn, as well as notes of mauve and aubergine. In essence, you want to look as delicious as a bar of chocolate. (Very fitting.)

Wonkacore also seems to follow a much bigger style trend that has been dominating 2023: food as fashion/beauty. We had glazed doughnut nails in spring, tomato girl summer and pumpkin spice hair in autumn – so it’s only natural to see it evolve into chocolate-ridden Wonkacore winter. But is this a match made in food heaven, or a trend better left to a world of pure imagination? We’ll leave it up to you to decide.
