How to keep your wardrobe looking fresh through the seasons
Looking to stay ahead of the curve? Keep up to date with the latest trends for spring and summer, courtesy of our SS22 style guide.
A recurring item on the runway this season is a good, oversized blazer. Taking heed from the power silhouette of the 1980s, this new take on the blazer promotes a looser, gender-less shape – think long, wide sleeves and broad shoulders. Pair it with just-as-loose trousers, shorts or a slick skirt; or even better, belt it up and wear your blazer as a dress.

Making a reappearance for yet another spring-summer, maxi skirts are forecasted to be bigger (and longer) than ever. Joining the ranks of ever-popular tiered skirts and animal prints will be the low-rise, Y2K-inspired boho maxi skirt, as well as slip skirts and hyper-feminine, floor-length designs that can be deemed nothing less than Bridgerton-esque (cue the Regencycore fans). The possibilities are as long as your skirts with this trend.

Rumour has it we’re set for a season of ultra-feminine fits. Departing from the stream of androgynous trends and styles, the humbly dubbed ‘girly girl’ is about to experience a renaissance. Think long skirts, frills, dresses and lots (and we mean LOTS) of pink. Ideal for summer days in the park and drinks with friends, this aesthetic is a tried and tested classic that resurfaces more often than not.

Once relegated to the likes of festivals and sunny days on the beach, bucket hats are fast making a name for themselves as the season’s must-have accessory. More and more are making their way to the urban landscape, marking a shift in street fashion towards more youthful styles. You can see the likes of Prada, Barbour and Pangaia all incorporating versions of the hat in their collections.

Perhaps one of the least expected trends to arise this season, uniform-centric style is now back on the curriculum. Gaining a following amongst all genders, this trend sees its wearer pull on pieces like sweater vests, oversized polo jumpers, tennis skirts and chunky loafers for a preppy-chic finish. Those passing the class, however, will bring to the table an edge of rebellion characterised by colour, cut-outs and self-expression.

Bags are making a BIG comeback this year. Long gone are the days of teeny tiny micro bags (for now), as this season we welcome the return of the supersized chunky bag. Not only are these bags a statement item for any outfit, they’re also packed with functionality. We’re talking wide, long-bodied, trip-hazard-sized bags that you could squeeze half the house into. The ideal grab-and-go bag for 2022.

Net was a recurring theme on the SS22 runway, taking shape in dresses, skirts, vests and even bags. Showcased in small and large knot patterns, spanning all the colours of the rainbow, and encrusted with gems and beads, netting has shown its diversity as a layering staple for the upcoming summer. Want proof? Just look at SS22 presentation from Stella McCartney, Chanel and Supriya Lele, which took net-wear to a whole new level of classy chic.

It would seem ‘matchy-matchy’ is now rather ‘catchy-catchy’, at least as far as co-ords go. From loungewear and tracksuits to the increasingly popular miniskirt suit, our post-Covid wardrobe has never looked so put-together. The flexibility of a good co-ord lets its wearer transition seamlessly from the office to the bar, appearing stylish with minimal effort. Opt for a bold, colour-blocked set for something timeless and elegant or spice things up with a jazzy, textural pattern.

Summer is fast-approaching – and for the first time since 2019 we have a full selection of events, festivals and celebrations to look forward to. That’s probably why one of the biggest trends to grace the runway this season is fringing, which with its trailing tassels and wild west aesthetic has become the unofficial uniform of cowboys and Coachella-goers alike. The brands harnessing festival fever include Alberta Ferretti and Chloé, which have both opted for woven designs spanning tops, dresses and bags.

As is customary with the changing season, vibrant colour is coming back in full force this spring to ward off the lingering blues of winter. An underlying trend that will no doubt needle its way into others, our love of all things bold and bright is set to sky-rocket. Intertwined with the growing popularity of Dopamine Dressing, the trend will no doubt be a mood-booster for the season ahead. Catch the rainbow making its way through your wardrobe soon…

Stand above the crowd with the year’s latest trend: platform shoes. Whether you’re a chunky trainer fan or a full-on go-go boot enthusiast, the time has come to don your tallest stompers and take to the streets. A trend more familiar than some of the others on this list, Y2K (short for ‘the year 2000’) is the celebration of early noughties fashion staples. Look back through your old teen magazines for style inspiration, led by the likes of J Lo, Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, and update it with a dash of 2022 attitude and body inclusivity. Think low-rise jeans, bandana tops, butterfly clips, bold colours and matching tracksuits – courtesy of the iconic Juicy Couture, of course.
